What (automatic) first car?

Yes, yes another dreary what car thread I know but a friend of mine has £2k to blow on a first car but it must be AUTOMATIC. It also needs to be smallish and reasonably economical although she won't be doing mega miles. Not sure what the insurance implications of being a new driver at 30 are but it needs to be sensible.
She doesn't want a Smart or an MX5 although I did point out the error of her ways
Also, did we ever get to the bottom of what constitutes an automatic? Do they have to be torque converter types or are DSG type boxes deemed to be Autos too?

Nissan Micra has to be the one here. Cheap as chips to run and insure and it doesnt sound like your friend is after thrills or quality.
That said, I wouldn't advocate getting an automatic first unless it's a necessity due to disability or not being able to pass a manual test. There is still plenty of learning to be done about clutch control, gearing and shifting to be done for a new driver.

Where are you in Essex as my elderly next door neighbour has just stopped driving and her Honda Jazz was going to put up for sale via her son a couple of weeks ago. I thinks its still in the garage as it is always been kept there.
It is an auto and in very good mechanical condition. It does have a few scrapes though as her judgement wasnt what it used to be . Hence the packing up driving

DSG i believe can be driven on an auto licence, but you'll not find a DSG anything for £2k i don't imagine.

Not sure if Kia Picanto is down to that money but might well be for high mileage.
Or look at some of the Hyundai - Getz/Atoz etc.
These far east cars tend not be lookers but they are reliable and easy to drive with a few toys. We had an auto Picanto that didn't need more than general servicing, was nippy, comfy with aircon, elec windows, remote locking etc
