My mate's going to Australia to do a year of her uni course and It got me thinking!
I'm an adventureous 19 year old and would LOVE to do something like this (without the uni part), She said her flight was about £300 which seems really good, what's the cost of living like out there? And job availability?
Cheers.

oz will be expensive, you would have to work there to feed yourself. Probably in menial, cash in hand slave jobs of dubious legality.
Have a look at indonesia or south america. You could save like a mad one here and then have 6 months on the razz and tourist trail in bolivia and have a proper holiday out of it rather than picking fruit in the fields for 12 hours every day.
save and plan, then relax and enjoy...

Just taken one of my mates with a very impressive CV 6 months to find a 6 month contract job in Oz, albeit that's in banking which is somewhat more specialised than what you're likely to be after.
As previously stated, you'll get far more bang for your buck in Asia or South America.
More interesting in my book too. No too sure what's "adventurous" about going to a country with a very similar culture that just happens to be on the other side of the planet.
Apart from the vast array of nasty beasties waiting to bite you on the sack when you go for a dump.

I did a uni exchange in Sydney when I was 19 and I have to say it was incredible! Currently though you'll really struggle to find a job in Oz. The market is tough and it is very expensive to live.
I'd recommend trying to find a teaching English job. I currently work in South Korea, but you can do it all over the world. Plenty of jobs out there where you don't need any qualifications and a lot more where only a basic 120 hour TEFL course will get you through the door. Have a look at www.tefl.com for more tips and job opportunities.
Edited to add that whatever you decide, just do it! I know too many people who have talked a good game about travelling or working abroad and never left the UK. It is an amazing experience and highly recommended
