Picked up one of these for SWMBO the other week. Seems pretty nifty for the price.

Another 20 notes would get you into a TZ8 or SX210 if zoom is an issue.
I've got a TZ6 and love it, the only thing is that if he's genuinely a casual photographer it's a bit on the chunky side, so not the best for slipping in a trouser pocket.

I've got an Ixus 70 and for something the size of a box of fags it takes some cracking shots.
