Just passed - Saxo VTR

Hi all,

Long time lurker, love threads like JamieP's Supra.

Just passed my test and had a saxo VTR in the garage waiting for me. (yes i know BIT of a chavvy car)

Absolutely love driving after commuting on a motorbike. Any way just saying hi and once i get my 1 years NCB time for a mk1 focus rs

1350 with admiral. but being 25 i guess thats why. No way was i getting anything smaller than this. Almost got a mk4 golf GTI but they wanted 2k for that and it got written off as it was being delivered to me lol (glad i got the saxo instead)

Not bad for a first car! Change the wheels for some original ones, and will look a tonne better IMO

ye mate wanted 250quid for his refurbed ones so i said leave those on agree they would look way better though . might get some and a powerflow back box. already has a induction kit on it so sounds pretty good. wont do anything else to it though just want it to learn how to drive till i upgrade

Hope you declared the modifications. All of them. And I's wait for the "powerbox". If not, your premium isn't really £1350, its a full refund the moment they void the policy. And the time to find out isn't just *after* your first crash.


I know its your pride and joy atm, and I don't want to dampen enthusiasm, but its still a small hatchback. Will 1 or 2 bhp from a noisy exhaust really turn it into a "sports car". I doubt it. You'd get more speed/performance/value spending the cash on more training or a track day to get it out your system, rather than using the road as a racetrack.

my insurance would be 2100 if i didnt have low mileage and my gf as named driver with 4years NCb and high excess. So 1382 with multi car discount seems ok was 1500 when i called up took extras off policy aswell. If i do get those extra mods which i doubt they would get declared aswell. i def think being 25 helps my price aswell.

Anyway to cars it drives great very fun pokey engine reminds me of my yamaha dtr when i get higher revs. I learnt in a c4vtr which was awesome. But this is just a fun small car very happy with it!

I def wnna get some track pratice (already have my next car fund) im not looking to race this down the road and turn it in to a sports car (i do love the noise more than speed) thats why ive always ridden motorbikes hehe

Admiral won't increase the policy price if the exhaust is for looks only, which they class a backbox as . I've been with them with 2 modified cars and got told the same both times. Just declare it anyway.

Also put the facelift VTS wheels on not the VTR wheels. They look a lot better. And no premium increas as they are a factory part not aftermarket.

good to know S18, reason id get a powerflow would be for lifetime guarantee. I gna look in those alloys been thinking about getting them for awhile they do look far better.

Don't forget you will need to tell your insurance company about those non-standard wheels (swines).

Another good reason for replacing them with standard ones!

(There seems to be no rhyme or reason with insurance companies - mine just charged me extra because I changed the wheels on my MX-5, but when I did it last year with a Clio - which had steel wheels as standard - all they did was put a note on the policy.)

That's a decent first motor. Can't say i like those wheels but hey- can't have it all

Id wouldnt bother with the late VTS rims, they dont feel as nice on 15s as they do on 14s. Nice set of VTR rims. Or some S2 rallye steels in white!!

Nice car, but if your only keeping it for a year to get your NCB up, then I really wouldn't waste money modding it to eek a little more power out of it especially if your not intending to declare any of the mods.

Spend time learning the car and how to drive, yep your passed your test - this doesn't automatically make you the worlds best driver! Then get your FRS!

Im def not spending money on this car, i plan on running it into the ground! Going to do a pass plus (for free driving instructors owes me one) then what else can i do to advance my driving? id love a track day

I think most tracks require a minimum 1+ year license held so may not be an option right now.

Is there such a requirement for the RAF Marham day? can't remember reading it anywhere for last Sept's weekend, not that it'd affect me anyway though so I may have skimmed over it. Definitely a good first track day, was for me.
