Economy 7 or night meter
Discussion
I have one of these meters, it's quite a new one with digital readout. When we moved in here the house had a single electric storage heater which I assumed was connected to the night side of this.
In the box where the meter is kept we used to have a large fuse thing that said "storage heaters" and a regular fuse box, these were both fed off the meter which had four large cables - two to each.
The fuse has been out of the storage heater side as we'd had it removed, today I received my first electric bill - was surprised to see a significant number of units used on the night meter so I checked it and it was up by about 2000.
Anyone know how does this work? I always assumed that it was like having two electric feeds/meters and things either ran off one or the other - or is it as they said when I phoned up that everything runs off the night rate side during those hours it's cheaper?
Cheers

The storage heater circuit is normally on an automatic time switch so that its 'fuse box' is only energised off-peak. But any other electricity used during those off-peak hours is also charged at the off-peak rate. So, say, you had an electric immersion heater on the main consumer unit, you might want to put that on a timer to also take advantage of the cheaper rate. With economy 7, although the off-peak is cheap, the on-peak is more expensive than the single rate. So if you aren't using a lot of electricity at night, Economy 7 may be more expensive for you - need to do some sums.
