Which documents in the car?
Discussion
I was just thinking should I have a knock or be hit by someone I'm not sure I'd be able to giv my insurance details at the actual scene as I've never carried any documents with me in the car. From a security / potential fraud point of view I've always left nothing more than the handbook in the glovebox, I even remove the service record. What do you keep in your car? Should I at least stick in the renewal reminder or similar to at least have a policy number to give, ot mayb just save it as a memo on my phone? Don't know how it has taken me 10 years of driving to think of this suddenly!

I carry nothing. When I have been involved in accidents I've always got straight onto my insurance company at the scene and get them to speak to the other party to get their details from them directly.
This can piss people off a bit as it can take some time to go through the call, the last time I had to do it was when a bus t boned me. I made the driver speak to my company which he wasn't very happy about as it made him late but the people on the bus were pretty sympathetic to me and didn't mind too much waiting.

Years ago when I was a student I kept all the documents in the car so that I always knew where they were, car got broken into and all the documents taken. Apart from being a pain in the bum the police said it wasn't a good idea because they are likely to use the documents to clone another car so I was very likely to get stopped/various parking and speeding notices through the post so make sure I have evidence of where I am for the new few months. Being a common car, a Ford Escort, it was going to be easy to clone. Luckily I didn't hear anything but I now won't keep any documents in the car unless I have to.
As far as I'm aware, in the event of an accident, you only have to provide your name address and reg number.
If it's in relation to a tug by the police, they will know all the details already, or will do quite quickly.
FWIW , I only carry my photocard licence on me for ID purposes. Everything else is safely tucked up at home.

What about if your Insurance company is via a broker that has limited opening hours? Is it best to see who the actual insurer is directly and track down a claims number for them to add to the phonebook? Last time I had a prang I did this and the broker wasn't too happy I'd not told them / gone through them until later.

I carry no 'paper' documents documents only the photo card part in my wallet. My insurance docs are on my phone as a pdf document.
+1 always carry my photocard licence around in my wallet and whenever I renew my insurance i get the company to email me a copy of the cover note so I can get it on my phone. My cars are always a bit of a tip anyway, any important docs could well get bundled up and thrown out with all the sweet wrappers and petrol receipts during one of my bi-annual clear outs.
