I own 2 cars, a Micra and a Ka and want to insure both, one for just me and the other for me and my teenage son to use with him as a named driver. I own both cars. If I use the KA to drive to work Monday to Friday but allow my son to use it in the evenings and at weekends, will that still be fronting? I would use the Micra at weekends etc. He would get the bus to college every day.

I have to ask; why do you have two cars? More specifically; why do you have those two cars?

Whoever drives it "most" must be named as the main driver (this does not have to be the policy holder). "Most" is not well defined, but if it's debatable you'd probably get away with either.

If your the main driver then its not fronting, If you drive 5 miles to work each day and he sticks 30 on every night it would probably be considered fronting.
can you not just get him insured on one of them as the main driver?

It's quite a clever idea really. If you have a teenager who needs a car only at weekends but don't want to pay the cost of insuring them as the main driver, you use their car during the week to make sure you're driving it more so it's legitimate to insure both cars with yourself as the main driver.

Don't see the problem with this.

Too expensive to insure him as the main driver. I am in truth looking at ways around it while staying legal. I just wonder if I actually do use the Ka every day will it make it legal. It would be with me at work from 8am - 6pm every day so he couldn't use it. Collegues and neighbours would know I use it. Would this be a legal loophole?

As long as you drive it more than him, yes. If you're driving it 5 miles a day to work and back and he's driving it 100 miles a day at the weekend, no.

Not sure how the insurance company would prove otherwise, after all, you do drive it, you will have petrol receipts, and CCTV footage of you driving to and from the work car park, I presume, and all that jazz.

I'm with Swift Cover and we own 2 cars both in my wifes name.
They allow both insurance policies to be in my wifes name but "my" car has me as the main driver.
Its perfectly legal, I rang them twice to make sure.
They are both fully comp and premiums very reasonable.
This may not help you as putting your son as main driver would bump up the premium but so would putting him as a named driver.

This. They are the ones you will be having an argument with if it all goes Pete Tong, so be straight with them (in much the same way as you have been straight in your original question on here) and get their agreement up front.

Yep, done this before. Spoke to the insurance company and figured out my wife would do the most mileage and hence she is the policy holder and I am a named driver.

Since when has mileage got anything to do with it? What if that 5 miles a day to & from work in rush hour(more risk) takes 30 mins each way yet his 100 miles over the weekend take 2 hours?

I'm pretty sure that my policy implies that mileage is the defining factor.

Is it not cheaper and safer for him to go to the pub every night, rather than driving all over the place, spending petrol money and eating McDonalds?
