approximate cost of new garage roof
Discussion
After a few unsuccessful attempts at fixing my garage roof to stop the leaks, I have deceided that a new roof is the only option
The garage in question is a standard sized single garage with a flat roof. The roof is currently made of corrugated concrete sheets. Im not bothered about what material is used as a replacement, as I am after the cheapest solution as I wont be doing the work myself. Has anyone got any idea how much I could be looking at, as the local roofing companies cant even be bothered to come and have a look!
thanks in advance

I'm not sure that it is asbestos, the house was built in 1976, and the garage 10 years later, I thought asbestos wasn't being used after the late 70s?
This is why I assume it's concrete. Is there a surefire way to tell?
You can have a sample sent off to the labs. Assume it is until proven otherwise. IIRS asbestos was still being used well into the '80s. That said, Asbestos cement doesn't contain as many fibres as other asbestos products. This is why I assume it's concrete. Is there a surefire way to tell?
Is it flat or pitched?
It's got nothing to do with the quantity of asbestos, it's the type of asbestos used and the fact that it is tightly bound that makes it 'safe'. The risk to you during removal (as long as you don't start smashing it up and snorting it) is infinitesimally small - considerably less than walking into the enclosed garage as the sheets gradually erode, as you have been doing all these years! That is why DIY removal is perfectly legal. Why do the panic merchants always jump on these threads? That's why people get ripped off by licensed contractors.
New Roof Cost? You'll have to decide on the spec. and materials/covering first.

so true i have taken down many an asbestos building/roof etc! and no bad effects, it the amount you are exposed to thats the killer, ie having a vodka every night wont kill you having 3 litres every night might New Roof Cost? You'll have to decide on the spec. and materials/covering first.
new roof costs would be ball park of £1k that is for ripping off everything replacing with ply boards and then a proper torch on roofing felt etc etc that is not disposing of the asbestos as that can be rather costly!!

I was not being a panic merchant, merely suggesting it was sensible to assume it is until proven otherwise.New Roof Cost? You'll have to decide on the spec. and materials/covering first.
For reference I removed my old asbestos garage a couple of months ago - it used to creek in the wind so I imagine the asbestos dust was being created constantly. I took all the precautions (P3 respirator, disposable overalls, wet it down etc) and double bagged. Took it out front for the council to collect on the day specified (they collect asbestos for free). They didn't turn up. After two weeks and a dead lawn they finally took it after the woman on the phone decided to escalate it to a "toxic waste hazard"! Two fat bald blokes turned up with an open backed truck and no masks, chucked it on the back breaking it in a few places and ripping the sheeting open. I watched from indoors with the windows shut.
As for recovering this needn't cost too much - you could replace with new corrugated cement sheets, or the new fibre sheets (though these need to be well supported as they sag. This kind of thing: http://www.roofingsuperstore.co.uk/product/ondulin...
An alternative might be metal sheets, though watch for condensation dripping from the roof.
OSB 3 1200x600mm tounge and groove timber is about £10 per m2
Joists are about £5 each plus £3 each for Joist Hangers ( if you need them)
Bitumen primer £15 tin should do a garage
Torch on Vapour control layer metal lined £7 per metre approx
Torch on Mineral cap sheet £7 per metre
Average roof should only take a decent local roofer one day at £120 ( ish)
£600 tops
Remove old roof - after soak with water to keep fibres togethor, take off sheets trying not to break them, wrap in plastic and get council to collect for about £150.
