Wine I can sometimes talk relatively intelligently about but beers are not something I am in to. The most exotic for me is Leffe Blonde!

On the assumption that we are only talking about bottled beers what are the favourites, particularly European beers and if any are good, French?

Looking at ordering a few mixed cases from Beers of Europe to try some but be interested to hear from those with first hand experience drink

Not European but can recommend Innis & Gunn ; something different from the usual beers.

Also if you click on the beers of the world image on that link, the PDF has a list of beers that Le Gavroche/Anthony's has on the menu(at the end); might give you some ideas as well.

The Americans are really kicking ass these days when it comes to micro-brew beers.

check out Flat Tire, Anchor Steam Beer and Steam Porter, Sierra Nevada, Blue Moon, Brooklyn etc.

For a non-euro I love Fuller's ESB, it's one of the few British ales that tastes excellent from a bottle. My favourite Belgian one is Duvel, in fact I should really stock up on some lick

London Pride for me. For an easy drinking lager, Peroni

Are you planning to match to food? Might be worth looking at fruit beers like kreik or fruili. Kreik goes very well with duck dishes. I'm currently trying to recreate cherry wheat beer at home now that cherry are on the trees. Domestic brews, I normally take what ever is local but a real favourite is theakstons old peculiar. European beers- I like bavarian wheat beers, they pair surprisingly well with fresh spicy foods they have a clovey flavour from the yeast. francescana is pretty good.

I tried Brewdog at last years London beerfest and thought it was foul.

Op, try any Fullers ale, they are all good, but look out for 1845 and a few other less popular bottled beers from them.

Esb and pride and safe as houses.

I love Pride too (it seems to travel well and thus is probably my favourite regular pub beer over here in The East, apart from Abbot!)...

It just doesn't taste the same to me when bottled though - I'd rather save it for a trip out! frown

+1 for the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, rather nice and I've seen some upmarket eateries serving it. Can't go wrong with some Budvar for the lager drinkers. Brew Dog is good beer but maybe an acquired taste. Current fav is Thornbridge Jaipur, now available in Waitrose, which is beautiful and endorsed by Oz and James!

Peroni (Gran Riserva though, not nastro azzuro) and Erdinger Weissbier are my two current favourites...

Brewdog have a wide variety of stuff, how well known are they down south?!

I've yet to taste anything by them that wasn't utterly disgusting if I'm honest. It's a shame, as I love the company, the branding and I think James who runs it is a top guy, but I their products always taste like they'd be better suited to cleaning the drains.

Must admit that I'd read about their marketing strategy a while before I tasted any of the beers... Despite loving the concept of what they're trying/ claiming to do, I had my suspicions that the end product would be a disappointment (it amazes me what st people will drink due to an ad campaign!) but I genuinly love them!

Thinking about it, I've not tried (despite proclaiming them all as awesome above!) any of the ultra-high ABV stuff they put out (the most extreme I've gone was Paradox which tasted more like a Long Island +JD than a stout!! ) - it does strike me as a publicity stunt, but I'd relish the chance be proven wrong! biggrin

Beer or lager?

If lager then they all taste very similar after 3 so get the one that looks the best and is the right price. We had this thread not long ago, and as per PH massive listed the most expensive lagers and what not, and anything else (despite the best selling lager in this country being Carling) that is drunk by the gallon by 90% of people in pubswas ste.

As per PH? Or as per a thread titled 'top quality lagers' which non of the budget crap deserved to be mentioned in? Hardly a pissing contest or something to get a chip on your shoulder about, we're talking about lagers after all, but when someone is asking for recommendations, it's fairly safe to assume they're not looking for the best 500 bottles for a tenner deal, no?
