So i was joining the m1 from the m25 going north and notice the ganties with compleatly blank signs across the motorway with cars pegging it through them and others jaming on the brake's just before them (this was all a bit mad!) i was doing just over 0.85 leptons and didn't see a flash at any of the gantries because i asumed that when the signs are not on then the cameras are off to (many people on here think the same)

i thought about it when i got home and had a look around on google and to be honest its all quite conflicting so i gave the highways agency a call, I asked.... while these gantry signs are blank and not showing any speed limits, are the cameras in force? ie.. inforcing national speed limit.

The advisors reply... No, they are only on when the highways agency apply a speed limit, anything from 20 to 60 to (calm) traffic or when there has been an accident. It is up to the police to monitor the cameras when not being used by the highways agency.

My question is what are the odds of getting a nip? The police must be raking it in if they are clocking everyone that goes through there over 70?!

Has any one been done by them or is it just scare tactics?

Thanks

Jack time

P.s I know this post may not be in the right place but i cant post in the speed/law section because this is my first time on the forum

Travel from N London to Luton, so use this stretch most days. The cameras were turned on a few months sgo, and have been seen to flash by me and work colleagues. Normal speed limit in force at the time, but couldn't say what speed they went off at.

Oooof! I thought they only came into force during a reduced speed limit!

They have them on M1 near chestefield too, and M42 as well.

Majority of the time they seem to be only used for variable limits.

I've been through at lepton-close speeds, unscathed. BUT heard stories contradicting this theory

Yeah me to,it's not very clear but i think that is the idea. no one ever seems to have got a ticket for when they are off but they still flash away? Maybe this govermment is not backing this as strongly as they planed.

Yeah.

Same with the average speed check ones on M11. Way back from Dover year before last I forgot them, trolled through at a steady lepton, realised....... Spent 28days stting it. Never heard a thing

As said before, they were flashing people a few months ago when NSL was in place. I gather it was just testing. I know a couple of people who were flashed during this time, and through their enquiries confirmed with highways that they were just testing then.

I pass through there every now and again, and it irks me that where before they would use an advisory speed limit for some long removed obstruction, they're now using the mandatory speed limit changes. I can't help but think that HA have got a new toy and they're damn well going to use it, required or not.

Quite possible.

TBH nowadays it doesn't bother me, as I rarely drive for work, so when on a jolly day out I'm either on CC in the 9-3 enjoying 47mpg+ or in the Austin 1300, pushing 60 is a rush

Cameras on M1 Jn 6a-9 are now calibrated, this was done over the last three sunday mornings while you and I were fast asleep. I believe its only the offside lane that works but don't quote me on that! Camera images are sent via direct feed to Herts Police HQ in Welwyn Garden City. Variable speed limits to manage traffic has been in operation for the last couple of months.

What..? Back in the days when they were cutting edge, I always had an 1100 up against the speedo stop..

Any slight incline did the trick...smile

I know it's capable of more..... When on the M62 the other sunday, we touched 75mph as overtaking. Whole car let out a loud: "HUZZAR" in celebration.

Just don't like pushing the old beast... Besides the brakes are far too st to be going anywhere above walking pace.

My mk3 fiesta 1100, now that went everywhere as fast as it physically could. May explain 4engines in 2years. HCS never was a good one
