I'm thinking of entering sprints and hillclimbs in the < 1400cc class. It needs to be a road going car, not kit car. Little 106's are the sort of thing. Any suggestions? The car and engine can be modified but must remain <1400 and no super / turbo charging.

It's gotta be hard to beat a 106 really but maybe someone can suggest something else.

It's easy to beat a 106 - The AX GTI. Same car, plastic body.

106 Rallye, 1.3 with 90ish bhp and very light.

S2 Rallye was a 1.6 so not an option.

dont discount an original mini, the engines can be tuned to 1380CC and will really move, especially in a hillclimb. Not cheap to do, but cooler. And if there is no minimum weight then glassfibre body panels are easy to pick up.

Now i imagine this would be cheating........but fairly certain a 106 wont see where this thing went: http://pistonheads.com/sales/2887534.htm bike engine ftw?

Otherwise yes a 106/AX would be a good choice, an AX would be mine, much lighter then a 106/Saxo.

106 and Saxo weigh more than the earlier cars like 205's and AX's. Even when stripped as there is simply more metal to cart about.

Best bet is to go and watch and see what's doing well, look at entry lists, results split times etc. Make sure you know what the rules and regs across the different classes are, these can vary from Hill to Hill too.

Panda 100hp? If your going to modify it you could lose alot of weight (get rid of aircon etc) and it's about 950k to being with. The engine is 1368cc so it would fit into the below 1.4 class, as you can guess it makes 100bhp as standard and the car already has a six speed box.

Rover 114 with the 103bhp K series?

Plenty tunable, should be able to do 120bhp with some mods and may well be lighter than the 106.

:O When did these drop down to <£1k? I'm gunna go buy me one then!

I'm not sure if you can find one on the budget, but a Suzuki Cuppa or a Honda Beat?

For the rules of your hillclimb are Turbo's (engine size X 1.5) if it has a turbo?

I was about to suggest a Metro GTi... 105bhp K Series lump is a peach, even in a 214SEi it felt like it went well!

My first car was an S1 106 XSi 1.4 which was just over 100bhp std but weighed more than the rallye as it had electric window's / mirrors... due to not being a "rallye" you'd probably pick one up cheaper... Also the engine is better imo and weight could easily be lost.

AX GT is the same as the 1.4 XSi,]

AX weighs 850 kg, the 106 is 880 kg. The XSi has an awful lot of toys to get rid of though!

205 Rallye was only 794 kg so there's not a lot in it really.

Polo G40 (supercharged) 1.3l is easily tuned to 150bhp+ with tonnes of torque. Weighs 830Kg BEFORE stripping out.

Traction and handling is the issue; just make sure to fit some wishbones and subframe.

Seriously under rated car. I miss mine!

It can't be supercharged or turbo charged buddy.

If it could be we could go through R5 GTT etc etc.

I have a Peugeot 205, 1360cc. Goes BRILLIANTLY for what it is. Not a Rallye but it's pov-spec so near enough. For sale if you're interested.
