993TT Import Advice
Discussion
If this is the Arena red one with the rather "different" interior trim, I believe it was from Malaysia (just across the Causeway from Singapore).I did come across it on my hunt for a car, but did not like the intereior. I cannot let you know any spec difference, but as I have a 96 TT, if you let me know what it has, I will compare and let you know.
Is the car currently registered in the UK or in another EU country?
One requirement for UK registration is that the car either passes SVA or that you obtan a Certificate of Conformity from the manufacturer. The CoC should be easy to obtain for an EU car but probably not for one that was built for outside of the EU. SVA can be passed but is more aggro as the test assumes nothing and goes through the car from one end to the other.

Hope I am not teaching you to suck eggs but… always buy a car on it’s merits and than you will likely not go wrong. If car is in the UK I totally recommend you insist on an require a independent Porsche garage to giving it a ½ day full check. Accident damage, Porsche replacement parts, test drive, BHP check, fluids, re-sprays, gearbox condition, clutch etc etc. This is your insurance and on a 993 Turbo essential work.
Car is less likely to have been stolen than a UK car as punishment for crimes in Singapore and Malaysia is very harsh and generally they are society that works for what they want and do not steal for money.
good luck

I think everyone who's been looking for a TT in the last year has come across that beauty!
I've actually spoken to a couple of different people who've viewed it in person and they say the interior is a big no no.
Also, it's worth bearing in mind that for example, US spec cars have different gear ratios, suspension etc so who knows what this car will have?
Besides all of that, low mileage can cause more problems than high mileage.

I considered a car which sounds very similar to this earlier this year at a higher price.
I spoke to the dealer, made an appointment to see it, questioned my mates, lost my confidence, cancelled the appointment and walked away without viewing it.
Everyone complains about high mileage cars, but low miles could be a wallet buster too. Rolling stones and moss etc and it was actually the low mileage that put me off in the end.
I was advised that unless storage conditions were absolutely perfect it might start blowing seals left right and centre. Whilst this is only a theoretical risk, I personally would want a serious inspection before purchase and a no quibble warranty on this specific point.
IIRC and assuming by some coincidence that it is the same car, the dealer in question assured me it had been inspected very recently (this is back in March when I was looking) and was only picked up on a rusty rear brake disc which is not exactly a show stopper.
For me personally, the import status was final nail in the coffin. I have no idea how this might effect value and it might not bother many purchasers, but as a novice enthusiast who had a bad experience with an import car previously and uncompleted recalls, I really didn't want a repeat performance on the thick end of 50K.
PS if you can persaude the dealer to let you test drive it solo, G force rolling road day II is on Saturday. Power test anyone....

Thanks for all of your advise.
Yes, it is the Marlow Cars 911 and yes the wood interior is hideous!! But it wouldn't take too much to replace with ally or carbon.
What I didn't appreciate was the potential downsides of a low milage car. Mind you, it sounds like they have had it for quite some time, so there may be a deal to be had, as long as an inspection provides a solid report.
Hmmm, will have to give this some serious thought........

Is this the car that Marlow cars or someone had? The one with the walnut dash?
Wow Dave, just looked at your profile; you have had some awesome cars in the past!

Yes, I've been very lucky over the years. A combination of catching the IT market at the right time and not having any kids. Both circumstances have now changed, but I still have Stuttgart running through my veins and hope to get back into the Porsche fold very soon.

offer him trade money for it. £37-£40. I only paid £40K for my TT with 36K miles on (RHD too!). His response to it being an import is that they're all imports! Just remember things like anti-roll bars, suspension components (shocks and springs) were different on ROW cars to european spec vehicles.
You'll also need to bin those comfort spec seats and fit the sport ones!

I was reading the turbo supplement from Porsche World last night; your car looks in great nick. Did you have a drive of / passenger ride in any of the other turbos there?
Thanks
Martyn.

Judging by what GuyR said, the inspection might be interesting. Make sure someone good looks over the car.
I think you need to do careful sums before you make any purchase. If you're not getting what you want you'll have to make some serious allowances to make it what you want. I'm sure there will be a car out there that will meet your every requirement. Don't compormise as it'll just cost you more money.
My car was recalled for a replacement wiring loom (engine), will an imported car be covered for this by Porsche? If not say good bye to another £1500+. Interior changes? £1,000 to remove the eco friendly interior.
Resale? Well, if a dealer has had it ten months+ how long will you be stuck with it?
Buying any 9 year old £40K+ car is going to be risky, but some have better odds than others.
