Hidden gems of MPG efficiency?

A friend of mine has just purchased a very nice E36 M3 Evo. On a recent journey from Cardiff to windsor he managed 34mpg. On the same journey my Clio 172 cup managed a staggering 45mpg. I think both these figures are pretty amazing when the clio is designed to nip around quickly and the M3 is a very fast, powerfull car. I've had standard golf GTi's that wouldn't get 34mpg.
I've been considering getting a Jag XK, but the rel world figures seem to be around 22mpg. Thats half what I can get in the clio and frankly too much of a jump for me to swallow.
What other cars are out there with suprisingly good economy for the performance they offer?

Yea, the cup is quite good, I have thought about getting a higher mpg car, but then I see 40-42mpg and know what it has in reserve and just bin that idea.
I just use the cup to cruise to work and back, which is a mixture of back lanes, dual carriageway and mway, along with a few blasts.. (normally leaving 1.8TD repo mobiles in its wake when they are sat on your ass)

I get 41mpg from my MINI Cooper S on my commute. This involves sitting in queues with my air con on then booting it between traffic lights. On a longer run, even driven fairly hard I can get 45mpg. My old Clio 182 used to give me only slight lower figures too. Ok, neither are rocketships but deliver respectable economy given their performance.

I got the wrong car.. I get 41mpg from the diesel MINI!!

That's all ok but same drive in a diesel would give you 50-60 mpg . I got a diesel and my pants get a bit moist when I get 45 mpg however my petrols would rarely see 30 mpg , normally low 20s Would love to see 30 mpg from a 180bhp + petrol
I get 30mpg over a tankful (also borne out by both instruments that display consumption) from a 21 year old V12 - at a cruise controlled 77mph at a nice relaxed 2,200rpm. Just on the cusp of lots of torque...
13 in town not great, nor the sub 7 figures when err, "pressing on". Cruising is what it was bought for and is mostly what it does, so I get an average 21-23, which is tolerable given the car and engine and doubly so when compared with an XJR that struggled to better 25, 10 and 18 respectively. I'm not brave enough for a Jag V12 though

I use to get 30 mpg out of my megane f1 (225 bhp) without seeing a motorway pretty much all the time for a year. Would love to see 30 mpg from a 180bhp + petrol

Mmm. You must be doing fairly long periods on light throttle at constant speed between the traffic lights to get those figures from the MCS! Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
