I have owned my S2 for about 3-4 months now and have recently started to hear this strange ticking noise when decelerating.

It is not there when accelerating, just about audible when maintaining a constant speed, and quite loud when I take my foot off the throttle (especially at higher engine revs). The noise comes from the speedo/rev couter area and is more noticable when the engine is warm. Depressing the clutch stops the noise immediately.

I don't think it's anything serious as the car has just been in for an 18,000 mile A service and the dealer did not mention anything. It's more annoying than anything else !!

Anybody got any ideas ?

Sounds to me like a bit of gearbox noise - to be expected in an Elise...
