Pondering a new purchase. Going to keep the MX5 and send it off after the summer for a tidy up and coat of paint so will be heading into single car territory for the winter.
Thinking about changing the Jag for something from the Land Rover stable possibly A Disco or Range Rover in the £1500 price range.
What is the potential for wallet rape and what should I be looking for?
Any other suggestions are welcomed too

Robust easy to work on vehicles. If you don't mind spannering or know someone who will for cheap then I see no reason why they should cost the earth.Thinking about changing the Jag for something from the Land Rover stable possibly A Disco or Range Rover in the £1500 price range.

They're not a bad as some people make out...
I've been running a '94 V8 Range Rover (one of the last classics) as my daily driver for the past 6 years (and had onother one before that). Converted to LPG so the 14mpg average works out to mid 20's pound for pound against petrol. Diesel Disco would be slightly better on fuel but you'll still only get high 20's I guess.
Mechanically mine has needed head gaskets, a CV joint and an oil cooler - all fitted by myself as they're strightforward to work on - plus general service items. Parts are cheap because there are plenty of specialists and pretty much everything is available.
If you do go for one make sure it's a solid one as the alloy panels can hide some pretty serious rot. Front inner wings rust along their top edges and sills and boot floor can be full of holes. Rear crossmembers rot badly (and are hidden by the rear bumper and fuel tank) and are expensive to replace - the panels are cheap but it's time consuming to do it properly.

Had my 1993 Defender 200tdi for 8 years. Had a fair few bills over the years but mostly down to offroading fun in clay!!
If you are happy to do odd jobs then they aren't very expensive to keep on the road at all.
With Discos watch for rust in the sills and the rear floor fan and footwells. Have a good rummage around the chassis for rot. Or you can get one for £500 that will be rusty and spend a few hundred welding it up!
