the best engine ever

Saw a black sls amg pass me at speed and by hell did it sound immense. Now have driven a car with that engine I have to say its the best a IMHO engine around at the mement.

On bb so will qualify that later but what do you think is the best at the moment?

From the ones I've heard in person, the AMG 63 engine has to be the best. Plenty of bass rumble, and on the standard exhausts it does not sound harsh when revved either.

From what I gather, it's also rather good to drive!

550bhp, N/A 9,000 rpm and revs from idle to redline on 0.6 seconds (wiki). Apparently smaller than a V8 and lighter than a V6. Sounds like a Formula One car. All with a dash of Lexus reliability.

Probably a bit thirsty, but otherwise perfection IMO.

Bike Engine: Honda CBX1000

And an honourable mention to Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593, an engine with the unerring ability
to turn blokes of a certain age all misty eyed.

Engine never put into production, but I bet it would've been amazing is this.....

The Rolls-Royce Crecy. A 26 Litre V12 Two stroke, that it was reckoned would've made 5000bhp!!!

I've been in an SL63 driven flat out (I'm mates with the leader of the silver arrows, which is handy!) and it was a very nice engine, yes It'd have to be a racing car engine for me personally. I've always been a fan of the Honda V12 from the post turbo era Mclaren F1 car:

Saw and heard this at VMAX. What an amazing sound... almost as good as the Carrera GT that was there

Oh, and the correct answer is the 13B-MSP Renesis Mazda rotary engine in the RX-8. The noise at 9000 RPM with a decent induction kit is immense.

The 2.0litre BMW diesel I'm sorry to say.

67mpg, 170bhp and a decent power band. It's also refined. It's by far and away the best engine in any car currently on sale and I'm extremely happy that I don't have to own one

I don't mean on engine note alone. What I loved about that 63 is the power delivery. Put you foot down and the world goes backward. Its an animal of an engine. Not econmic but so smooth. Perfection if you ask me. Beats the ferrai ones in all aspects. Well done mercedes

As good as that engine was (and it was pretty good considering it's around 60 years old), it didn't get fitted to loads of different cars because it was a great engine, it got used because it was cheap and readily available.
