''sounds just like a Golf''
Discussion
Although I have previously placed the Mk2 on ‘’Readers cars’’ I thought I should introduce the pair as a modest fleet.

I purchased this 1992 Golf GTI 16v roughly 3 years ago, I was pretty much sold on it when I first saw it. The interior was immaculate and despite lacquer peeling off the bonnet and the front suspension which had collapsed it looked clean.

I replaced the suspension with adjustable coilovers all round and had the front end painted. It has a supersprint exhaust system soon to be replaced as its seen better days, other than this I believe it to be pretty stock. I have just finished refurbishing the BBS RM wheels which I am really happy with. Other than general maintenance I have done nothing under the bonnet however when I bought it there were several invoices totalling to over £800 from Stealth racing not sure on exactly what has been done but I believe it to have had cams and a changed ECU, It pulls like a train.

Also I have a 1996 Golf GTI 16v 20th Anniversary. I use this as my daily as it’s easier to live with, but not as fun as the Mk2. I purchased it just before Christmas 2010 but in March it died as big and little end went on cylinder 4. To be honest the engine had felt weak from when I bought it and with 116k on it I replaced it with an identical 2.0 16v ABF that has done 70k which is pretty good for a lump from this vintage and is a vast improvement to drive, much smoother.

Upon researching the model on Wikipedia it seems to be pretty rare. 1000 20th anniversary models were built, 250 diesels, 600 8v and only 150 16v. This vehicle was totally standard when I bought it and I intend to keep it like that, however I have replaced the suspension with adjustable coilovers because it just looked to high and awkward standard. All I have planned next is to refurb the wheels as they have corroded badly and I think this will finish the car.

Would like your feedback and criticism,
Cheers.

What a nice collection! I have a real soft spot for Mk2s as I learnt to drive in an 8 valve 5 door when I was 10, great fun cars! The Mk3s i'd always considered to be a bit of a pudding and always overlooked them, however now with a few miles under my belt as a driver I can see how one would appeal as a daily, and yours looks very smart indeed. Thanks for sharing
P.S. superb BBSs on nthe Mk 2
