Hi All

Sorry I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to Sky/Satellite etc but I've recently moved house and have inherited a sky dish, fitted with HD LNB and 2 feeds into the lounge.

At present I just have my basic old sky box plugged into it.

I want to upgrade to HD but either via a freesat HD box or a sky + HD box (without subscription - I I intend to ditch Sky)

So my question is - can I buy a used Sky + HD Box, plug it in without a card and use it to receive channels such as ITV HD and BBC HD without cost?

Also - if I do this will I be able to use the built in harddrive to record programmes? or does this require a suitably subscribed card??

Many thanks!!

Yes you can get the HD channels but you won't be able to record them as sky disables the record facility. Better off getting a freesatHD or freeviewFD PVR.

  • No such thing as an HD LNB The standard LNB copes with both SD and HD. Twin feed usually for Sky+ SD or HD.
  • You can only use the record facility on Sky+HD with a subscription.
  • There are a number of FreesatHD recorders around (Humax seems to be the current favourite) They require both feeds.
  • Currently BBC1 HD, BBC HD, ITV1 HD, Channel4 HD and NHK HD. I can also get STV HD by using "Other Sat" option on my TV with built in FreesatHD tuner.
