Article stating how Mammas and Pappas car seat is torn apart at 40mph:

Can't believe the quote from the manufacturer on page 2 :

"We believe that 30mph is the speed at which most accidents occur, which is why it was chosen for this test standard".

Fair enough, you can't design something like a car seat for every eventuality but is this statement proven anywhere?

I'll have a discussion with my colleague who deals with in car safety - that is a really worrying article and we'll be looking into that today.

Timf,

You're right. These are carry cots that are sold as "dual-purpose". You can use them as car seats too.

Well, they're not strictly able to be used as car seats. The M&P model mentioned is simply a carrycot, but they do sell optional straps to allow you to fasten the whole thing to your back seat.
Not conviced by the whole principle anyway, as there wouldn't appear to be much (if anything) to stop the baby from flying out of the cot, even if it was securely attached to the car...

Besides which, these carrycot arrangements take up the entire back seat! Some friends of ours had one, it was a complete pain to manoeuvre and fit in the back seat, and it weighed a ton with Junior in it.

Blimey. We had a Navetta for our son when he was born. The reason we went for it is that new borns (up to about 3 months I think) shouldn't travel in a seating position for longer than 30 minutes or so. Because of that, we weren't happy with the usual car seat until he was 3 months old. I remember the hospital staff being very impressed with it from a baby comfort point of view. It then clipped onto the buggy wheels and you had an old fashioned style lay flat pram.
Seems you can't win. Maybe the best thing to do is never leave the house!

Just bloody typical, cot meets prescribed (government) standard, but some self appointed group says the standard isn't high enough so these seats fail.
So who sets the standards for journalism 'cos I think they need raising.
