What has been your worst moment?

For me it has to be seeing Henry Surtees fatal accident happen in front of me,my mate and i were standing not far from where the wheel flew into the woods (but for the grace of god no spectators or marshalls were in the way) and it all happened so quickly then as the initial confusion subsided all you could hear was the sickening sound of Henry;s car jammed on full throttle and the shout of the marshal to stop filming as the kill switch was turned.
Deeply upsetting and made me question things for a few weeks,i guess it still haunts me a bit and so sad that a decent man that John Surtees is has to carry this loss with him.

Anywhere where there was blatant cheating really. Just ruins the fun and proves that it means nothing to win (in sports) if you're cheating

When I heard that Richard Burns had finally lost his battle with cancer.

I was gutted .

I saw Richard at the Castle Combe rally day during the year he died, from his appearance on the day it was obvious the treatment was not going well. I had lost my dad in very similar circumstances 10 years before, seeing Richard like that and (in my humble opinion) knowing where it was leading was heartbreaking - not helped by the fact I was a year or so older then Richard.

Completely different circumstances but the manner of receipt of the news of Colin McRae's death was shocking, just shocking. (It came to my attention via a forum first and the posters were those who would know and wouldn't make something like that up).

Craig Moore's crash at Fontana in 1999.

I remember being hugely into CART at the time, 9 years old and watching the race live with my mum.

As soon as you saw the accident you just knew he wasn't gonna survive, just mad to think about what it was like at the time. Some of the crashes you see you wonder how on earth they could survive and then they always do but this was different.

I have a slight suspscion that I would've seen Senna's live as a kid but I can't remember it at all.

I think you mean Greg but yes a horrible crash and one you knew would be fatal

Same here, I think it's the only time I've ever felt genuinely sad when hearing someone famous had died.

Too many to list, senna's death, and ratzenberger the day before, DJ being killed in the isle of man, Gregg moore's fatal accident, but for me, it's bike related, and a tie between

Kenny Irons being killed in front of where we stood at Cadwell Park-i'd only spoken to him 10 minutes beforehand
and

Mark Salle being killed in front of us at Brands Hatch

Both of these were horrific for the same reason, you could see it happening in slow motion, and could do nothing about it.

Probaberly seeing the bbc documentary on the le mans disaster, cannot rememeber the year but seeing the photos of the fans stood and then in the space of seconds another photo showing people scattered!!just hurendous and very sad!!!

2 times, 1st was niel shanahans accident at oulton in 97ish, i was 12, saw the accident at the track and will never forget it, 2nd was a guy called chris hampson, came off his drag bike at oulton around the same time, died the same day, very sad to loose lives, not all of them well known, but all deserved to be remembered

Henry Surtees, totally innocent, the word IF is insufficient.

If he had not been run off the track at Druids on lap one, If he had been 1/10th of a second in front or behind. If another drivers accident had not happened, if the wheel tether had held.

If he had not been involved he would have been a big talent.

Same for me except I saw it live on TV but had seen him the week before at Donington having an incredible race. I think what made it worse was that it was on the warm up lap.

I'd also add Phil Mellor being killed at the TT, that really was a shock.

Ratzenburger's accident at Imola in 1994 was shocking as you knew he was dead before the car came to a rest as his head flopped to the side.

Tragic.

Chris Hampson died at Santa Pod.

Ah, yeah. I was too young to be into F1 back in 1994, and it's only recently that I've seen the footage of Ratzenberger's crash (when I saw the Senna film). Has to be one of the most disturbing and upsetting bits of film I've seen, as you say because of the way his head rolls from one side to the other.

I've only been into motorsports in a big way for the last few years and as yet I've not seen any fatal accidents as they happen, either on TV or in person, so I don't really have any worst motorsports moments. Rather hope it stays that way (although the law of averages says it probably won't).
