And it really does easily average 70mpg - actually if your doing 40k a year probably you will see it get into 80's on long runs.
So fast enough, nice and low sitting, you can spec it with m sport dynamic suspension super cheap car tax and nice place to be.

I don't commute nowadays (thank f**k) but when I did it was 70 miles each way to work and back in an Audi TT 2.0 turbo (not too bad) and then a Merc CLK 220CDI (even cheaper).
If you go for a petrol car run it on super unleaded where the extra cost per tank compared to regular unleaded is more than offset by the extra mpg. The difference was 400 vs 500 miles per tank in the tiTTy @ 7p per litre more for a 55l tank.

I'd st myself if I had to commute or drive 30k miles a year in the UK. It's bad enough going into town at times let along sitting on the M4 or M6 all day as a rep.
I think the BMW wins this but you don't need ED at all, just get a run of the mill 320d and forget the built in nav, Tomton is miles better than any OEM sat nav from any manufacturer.

I do just under 30k/year in that, then about 5k/year in the Tiv - and all the travel is in my own time

What sort of 30k miles per year? As in town/m-way cruising split?
If mostly the latter as I assume by the sitting at 8- all day, go for a used S80 2.4D 163 or 175PS, it's loads more efficient than the 185PS D5 and at a cruise you'd never know the difference in practice, quieter and a bit smoother too. That and not being possessed of a German badge, you don't pay through the nose for that, but still get at least comparable build quality. Look at the last couple of days' threads about comfiest cars/seats - so much mention of Volvo large platform cars - with good reason.
As you say you're getting a car allowance, the company car tax benefits of the lowest CO2 new cars are irrelevant, you'll pay a bit more in VED each year, but that's recouped many times over by the initial purchase price differential.

My Dad has one of these for 35k miles a year and it's fantastic. 60 in under 8 seconds, a genuine 60-70mpg on the motorway, beautiful balanced rear drive handling, really quiet on the motorway, and the optional leather seats are very supportive and comfortable. Unless the OP's budget stretches to a 5 series (which I'm guessing would be quieter and more comfortable still?), I can't think of a better car for the job.http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2967010.htm
