The standard code is 747L. 747L equates to tax allowances of £7,475. A tax code of 94L equates to much reduced allowances of only £945. In other words, her annual salary over £945 will be taxed.

Has she been issued with a detailed coding by HMRC. If she hasn't, she needs to contact them directly and ask them for an explanation as to why her tax allowances have been so drastically reduced.

The most common reasons why a coding will drop so much is due to either

a) a sizeable Benefit in Kind - such as a company car

b) a large amount of tax being collected in respect of an earlier tax year

c) a combination of a) and b).
