Ideas sought...

I have a problem drain which takes water from a downpipe from the gutter and which blocks with dirt washing down off the roof. If I am not careful in keeping it clear water from the drain ends up in the house as the dirtis quite heavy and it blocks the drain.

I have put a narrow mesh over the drain cover which stops the leaves and moss being washed down but a mix of fine sand and dirt from the gutters and roofing tiles is getting through. I have washed out the drainand gutter as well as cleared the roof of moss but I am looking for ideas as to how to stop the heavier fine particles passing into the drain. The best I can think of is the foot from a pair of tights attached to the foot at the bottom of the drain but fear that will soon block with leaves and moss too and simply block the downpipe.

Any ideas?

Run down pipe in to a Water butt and then have overflow from butt run to drain. Sediment will settle in butt and you can probably drain off seminent from bottom tap of butt in to a bucket and pour down loo

Sadly the pipe and the drain are on the neighbours drive so it has to be a solution which doesn't encroach as he can hardly get his car passed anyway. I had thought about putting some sort of trap further up the downpipe or even resetting the gutters to run the water to other downpipes completely which I could do if I increased the gutter size as long as the one downpipe would cope with the water from such a large area (it drains the south side of the neighbour's roof too).

You need a Hedgehog Gutter brush.

You can either fill the entire length of the gutter (expensive) or like me, just one metre per downpipe and sit it in the gutter over the opening. This has worked well so far. I re-roofed a property last year and the concrete tiles have been shedding the excess sand coating. Combined with the leaves and flowers from the surrounding trees this would have nicely clogged the pipe and perhaps also the soakaways. I've had to clean them out a couple of times but it's easily done.

I think the Screwfix thing could work fitted just below ground and the headgohog would filter moss but not the silt but it sounds like it has helped with the sand from the times for you. I will try both!
