What are 1 series coupes like?

The wife wants a new car, apparently a 1 series coupe 120d m sport but she wants ME to pay for it because apparently i should pay as i need to make up for the amount of time i spend in the pub with my mates and lack time at home with her moaning about something or other 
She had a e46 330ci before this which i liked and used quite a lot so i don't have to put as many miles on my M5, so what ever she gets i will have to use alot of the time as i the m5 costs me a bomb to run daily!
I really don't want her to get one if they are s
t, i think they look pretty smart although a little small, how do they drive? believe it or not i have never owned a diesel before just after general opinions on them are they fun to chuck about? enough power for some rwd fun?

They only bought it for the badge, I mean why else would you buy one?
I presume they lug a lot of stuff around to not be able to 'make do' with a 1 Series boot, why didn't they look at luggage space before buying one? Mental. They only bought it for the badge, I mean why else would you buy one?

Have this exact car for day 2 day family car & think it's great. Only upgrade I went for was the M wheels (a must for looks), which set it off nicely. Done 11K miles in it so far. If you want a diesel then BMW are ahead of everyone else. Plenty of ooomph from the 2.0 & we get 45 mpg average, with best set at 54mpg sticking below 80 on 100 mile motorway trip. Even hooning it, it's still around 40 mpg !! Cracking chassis on car with plenty of feedback & well balanced. Good fun in the wet, with traction control keeping you safe but letting you have a little fun at same time.
Best to see if you can get a days test drive of car & see what you think.

They do semi-regular trips to Spain via France, taking lots of stuff with them.My father has a Lexus GS450, boot is barely big enough for his golf clubs. So they went looking for something for the mom to drive and went straight to BMW.

Yes.... Mental, I dunno what goes through their heads sometimes. They ended up with a VW Tiguan, which still has pitiful boot space.They're really good fun, I love driving mine. It feels really planted and chuckable, and the engine's really smooth for a diesel. It pulls well and if you turn the tc off you can get the tail out occasionally. If it's any concern, sticking the cruise on at 70 returns ~55mpg on the motorway, and I've got 600 miles out of a tank before.
I'm actually selling my 120d, it's a 3dr hatchback, I think it looks better than the 5dr.

That's a pretty dim comment and, given that your parents bought a car without considering the size of the boot, I can see where you get it from. They only bought it for the badge, I mean why else would you buy one?

A 1-series is a cracking little car. Especially in 130i guise. Not too sure about the 120d but i'm guessing it's a good diesel engine also.
I test drove a 120d M-Sport today on behalf of my dad - he's trying to get rid of a Lexus IS 220d because of the woeful (29mpg!) fuel economy. Promisingly, the trip computer in the BMW was reading 51mpg and that's probably after a week of dealer test drives.
Cabin in the BMW was very nearly on par with the Lexus - it's a small car so it's a bit cramped in the back and I couldn't even find any cupholders, but everything seemed hewn from sturdy, 'nice' materials. Typical BMW, really - emphasis on sturdiness and looks rather than 'soft touch' this and that everywhere. Not sure how it would look with cloth instead of leather though. It holds you in well and the seats are very adjustable. Road noise was a bit more noticeable above 70mph but then it's not exactly weighed down with sound insulation! 60/40 split rear seats is a practical plus point, but the boot is alright.
It's 'pokey' rather than 'grunty' to drive - the salesman wasn't keen to let me stretch its legs but the gear ratios seemed particularly short - probably to get the most out of the smaller engine. Certainly, it was happy in 4th where the Lexus with its stupidly tall gearing would want you in 2nd. The Lexus would hold 3rd past 85mph and still be pulling hard - comedy gearing meaning you never really saw any use out of 6th. The BMW wants you to work the box, and it's nice enough to use that you don't mind doing so.
The ride is very firm but I'm biased coming from cars which positively wallow over the slightest bump - if you've come from an M5 then I doubt you'll notice! The roads were very wet today but I still couldn't provoke much of a reaction from the traction control. Probably a combination of salesman in the back seat, and having to really plan ahead to be in the right gear to keep things spooled up and ready to go when you boot it. Typical small diesel really. I think it has an open diff, as well?

Whatever you do, do NOT get a 116. There are Argos hairdryers more powerful.
I agree with the 116i comment; however the 116d isn't actually that bad. My ex had one (company car) and I borrowed it for a test drive before I got mine, it was very competent as it handled similarly to my 120d, and the performance wasn't groundbreaking, but not 1.0 Corsa reminsicent either.I even managed to overtake three cars sitting dozily behind a tractor in one move too!
