Hey there folks, just wondering from people who have experienced a mk1 with a LSD and one without would you say its worth seeking out. I'd like one but they seem rare on early mk1's which is really my market.

The thing that concerns me is that I'll buy a LSD-less car and then regret it.

Also is there any obvious visual indicator of whether a Mk1 has a LSD or not?

ETA: due to brain failure this morning I neglected to mention I'm talking about LSDiffs here. Post fixed now.

most import 1.6 mk1's have viscous lsds, but they revert to an open diff pretty quickly with spirited driving. some(if not most)1.8 mk1s have a torsen diff which is supposed to be alot better.. Special editions DO have an lsd e.g s-special, s-limited, rs-limited etc...

when my diff was working properly it was so much fun!

Doesn't fitting an LSD induce some understeer?

Mine doesn't have one. I still manage not to crash it.

Limited slip diff isn't to stop you crashing, it's for hooliganism!

It will do, yes, but at the advantage of greater traction.
The differences on the road will be negligible, unless you are truly 'on it'.
I enjoy mine mostly on wet roundabouts! driving

You can still have it sideways pretty easily in the wet without a torsen. I speak from experience hehe

you can't easilly hold a slide without an LSD though.

Without it'll go sideways and then you collect the slide. With I go around and round and round and round the roundabout looking out the passenger window :P

I've had open, viscous & torsen difs, for me the torsen is the best unquestionably, consistant controlable lock up makes drifts so so much easier.

For novices however can be better to run with open difs, mx5 are often derided as girlie cars, but in the wet esp with not the best rubber, a diff'ed mx5 is pretty frisky at the rear esp for something with such low power & for those used to fwd.

Absolutely.
I spun my car in the wet not long into my ownership, I'm glad I did it early on (and didn't really damage my car) as it taught me a valuable lesson.

On most special editions it was only an option, so many don't have them I think...

Yup. Just a data point, I don't know which other special editions get one as part of the specification.

applies to JDM special editions. Most UK specials were based on the base model so didn't have LSD even as an option.

Yes sorry for the confusion, I cut-out too much of towelie's quote, which was specifically referring to Mk 1 imports...silly
