The V5C shows the present registered keeper and the one previous to them, if there are more than two owners you're stuffed in the absence of all the service invoices for the car which will detail who was having the work carried out. In the absence of the V5C though, you can only find out the current registered keeper by applying in writing to DVLA and you need to have a good reason to do so, they will also write to the current registered keeper to inform them of this data request. You stumble into Data Protection Act stuff otherwise.
The service book for the car usually has the front page filled out in the details of the first registered keeper, then you'll need to write to them all or find their contact number on 192.com or similar, assuming they haven't moved.
Quick question re: the V5 and the VOSA website
Is there any harm/danger in providing the number on the V5 to potential buyers so they can see its recorded mileage and MOT history? AFAICS it would save a lot of time and trouble if potential purchasers could see this before making a XXX mile round trip to see the car ?

I wouldn't have thought so. Ah that puts a different spin on it. Just out of interest say a car had 4 previous owners and 1 declined to divulge there info what would the DVLA do? Send all info bar that 1 person or not send any info at all?
