Im fancying changing my scirocco for something more practical (have a vx220 for PH style driving)
So have been fancying a small 4x4 for a while. I was going to order an evoque months ago but had work issues that have since been resolved that meant i wasnt in a position to do so. I will probably speak to landrover to see what the wait has increased to tomorrow but suspect it will now be well into next year.The 4wd will be more practical in terms of ferrying stuff about, in terms of carrying the dog and also possibly towing (possibly) and as we live in the north pennines will be useful in the snow which can be a pain for weeks on end in the winter.
So what other things should i consider?
main criteria - 4 wheel drive, fairly economical (suppose diesel), a nice place to sit, leather, ipod/usb intergration, budjet realistically is a max of 30k.

+1 wasn't the biggest fan of them at the beginning but they look smart in the flesh and I would have one over Tiguan for example.Mazda is cool as well, it would have to be the recent facelift though.
Honda CRV, not too keen on it. Comparing with previous model it looks like a cheap toy.
fiat panda maybe a bit low rent inside, cx7 maybe a bit big for me.

rangie evoque - this would have been ordered 4 months ago if i had had issues at work. Pure spec 150hp diesel 4x4, 4 door model with just a couple of options ticked at just over 29k

audi q5 (seem to be just under 30k with discounts)

bmw x3 (just under 30k with discounts)

skoda yeti
vw tiguan
I would prefer a new car or maybe an ex demo (i know you waste money buying new cars but i like them)

That's quite a wide selection there, the Yeti starts at about half the price the Evoque does!
I think the X3 is probably the best all rounder, the new model seems to be quite well rated in xDrive 20d form.
At the same time, if you like your Scirocco then a Tiguan might be the best as they share quite a lot and feel very similar inside.

Tiguan is being replaced soon I think, Yetis have a long wait I'm led to believe. I'd be going headlong for the Mazda CX-7.
The Tiguan has just had a face lift, so shouldn't be getting replaced for another 3 years.Mine goes back to the lease company next week.

The CX7 is roughly the same size as the Kuga, X3 and Tiguan. Got to be worth a visit to the dealer just to see it in the metal and ideally have a test drive. It's not considered as practical as some though so if that's a priority then others might be better. Worth adding Nissan X-Trail and Land Rover Freelander to the list. You have some good choices to pick from at your price range so it's worth being picky.I had been considering the below

My dad's got a similar dilemma at the moment, and the Freelander (in HSE spec) is at the top of his list. There is a new facelifted version which you can get with the more powerful SD4 diesel, but those are probably slightly over budget for nearly new.
We've looked at a 1/2 year old one's with low mileage, and it seems as if you can get a decent one for around 25/26k
