A friend of mine has a 106 1.4 quicksilver for a track project. Looks like the engine is lunched. This is a low budget project and will be built in his garage.
What engine would be the best option to fit. Would the 106gti 1.6 "fit straight in" or is it more work than just a bolt in jobbie. Any other engines or setups worth considering?

VTR engine will be a lot cheaper, and the later ones are 100bhp

Not that much.

It has to be a fairly straight easy swap.

what about the old favourite Mi16 or Pug 306 GTi-6 lump?

Remember the man`s got a 1.4 106!! with 1.4 suspension and brakes?? anything other than an uprated TU engine would mean a major conversion job,lots of skilled work and lots of dosh.

Why not just find a like-for-like engine, that was you know everything will fit and can transfer the best parts onto the new engine?

The Mi16 or GTi-6 lump would be a fairly mammoth task to install. It can be done, but not easily or cheaply.

The best bang per buck option is to fit a 106 GTi engine and gearbox. Find a write off of similar age (make sure the ECU's are either single pin or triple pin....one loom won't fit the other) and transplant all the bits over. Then flog whatevers left that isn't bent!

Of course the easiest way is just to buy a GTi or Saxo VTS in the first place!

As mentioned above just stick a 106 gti engine in it, but as it will be used on track it will work better with the 1.4 xsi gearbox.

Better option is to use a JP4 cylinder head from a 206gt or c2vts, put the 106 cams and valve springs in and mate this to the block of the 106 engine. Run on a standard 106 gti map and it should give about 150 bhp.
