Flags at festivals
Discussion
I've never been to a festival and I very much doubt I will go but while enjoying glastonbury from the comfort of my sofa the amount of flags that people have seems to be getting higher every year.
Fair enough it's nice to see your flag on TV when you come home and watch the highlights but they would piss me off if I was in the crowd. Like I said I've never been to a festival but I guess it's pretty hard work to get anywhere near the front but the people that are a hundred foot or so away could still see whats going on on the stage if it wasn't for all the flags blocking the view.
Or am I just being a miserable bugger?

Flags do serve a purpose though, it helps you find your friends amongst the crowd. Just need to tell them which flag you are under...
That reminds me of one year at Glastonbury my brother telling me he had a flashing light above his tent.I went to the camping field to find him one night and every second tent had a flashing light above it.

Leeds/Reading have banned flags from the arena too.
Having been to the year when they weren't banned and the following year when they were, it was definitely an improvement. With flags you spend half the time craning your neck or shifting around so you can see the stage. It does make it harder to find where your mates are after you've been to the bar or for a piss, but it's not too difficult as long as you're not completely retarded and can navigate to the same spot you were in 15 minutes previously.

I'm just back from glastonbury today. First time for me, and I didn't have a flag, but I think they are great and add to the atmosphere with quite a few creative designs. I think if you went to a festival and got upset by a few people with flags then perhaps it would be better to stay home and buy the CD!
ETA: bloody umbrellas though....

Flags aren't really a problem.
If its a band you really like you get towards the front and the flags are too high up to get in the way. If its a band your so so about then go back a bit and look at the massive sreens they have dotted around.
The girls that sit on a guys shoulders right in front of you for the entire set are more annoying. Especially if they don't flash the goods!

I've not been too fussed, they were stopped at download because it was getting ridiculous I think, you couldn't see the stage for flags at points, and the big screens would show a stage with a load of flags flying in front of it! They can add to the atmosphere and fun of it though, couldn't fit the 30ft flagpole in the car for rockness this year though. D'oh!
