What is the likely senario if stopped on a motor cycle with a full race exhaust system fitted. No other offence, just the use of the vehicle on the public highway, fitted with a system not bearing the correct approval marks etc?

Does this only apply to motorbikes? My Tiger kit-car has a custom exhaust on it with no markings at all and I'm not aware of anything that says it sould as the car went through a government approved SVA test which checks all these things.

Off topic...

Yesterday I saw a bike parked in my street with a big sticker on the side saying "A louder bike is a safer bike", I couldn't agree more.

The reason for me asking is that my local MOT station, who have always passed my bikes with full race systems, have had the hard word from the DOT. They will no longer pass the bike without a legal system. I am therefore faced with an exhaust-off-on-off-on every year, something I'm not sure I can be bothered with. If the BIBs are going to start to allocate points for an offence associated with the exhaust, then I have some serious rethinking to do........

Motor cycles used on a road after 1.2.96, the silencer which forms part of the original equipment must have EEC approval and marked in accordance with EEC Directive 78/1015 and amended by Directive 89/1235.
Likewise to a replacement. Not marked seems to offend Regulation 57A M.V (Con and Use) Regs, 1986.

Presumably yours will be marked NOT FOR ROAD USE i.e. Race cams which in itself is an offence under said Regulation.

Max 1000 note fine. No points or disqualification.

Current use may also offend Regulation as using a m.c. on a road not meeting noise level requirements and is not in good and efficient working order or has been alterd and the noise is greater. (Reg 57B)

What would happen. All down to BiB who stop you. May sheet for court (not sure on a FPN as I don't have a list) or if very kind, offer VDRS (Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme - put it right, have certified at MOT Garage and produce this at Plod Station and NFA.)

Its all down to the Pc who stops you.
Personally, im not bothered as long as its not earshatteringly loud.

Most Trafpols are bike riders anyway, they will know about it and its always something for them to fall back on if the rider has the arse or something similar.

More important things to target really.....bad car drivers and bike riders

Daftlad has got a point here. My bike is as quiet as a mouse fart (the only time it sings is when its getting close to 14,000rpm...never happens though ), it's a totally legal stamped up zorst. The problem I have in my local town is people simply do not hear me coming. So many times people just walk straight into the road in front of me. A mate of mine visited a while back with his bike, he's got a modded zorst on his (yamaha dragstar....sounds like a bloody tractor!!!!!!) Pedestrians actually look round to see where he's coming from !!!!!
I'm not familiar with sound level limits and stuff, but every standard sports bike is so much quieter than a Harley (agricultural technology at laser beam prices).....seems like some sort of double standard when it comes to testing these things (not the BiB, the people that grant import licenses)

like my "sportster"?
