Castrol 10W-60 Oil - too many types
Discussion
Right I'm normally pretty good at this!
But this one took a bit more effort than usually and probably gets overlooked by most
The manual says Castrol RS 10W-60 which is no longer available.
Castrol now do 3 versions of 10W-60
Edge
Edge Sport
TWS
Found this quote found elsewhere on PH
Edge Sport = RS
Edge = TWS = BMW spec
My question then - is there an issue using the BMW spec in the Aston?

The TWS Motorsport and the RS 10W-60 are not the same product.
TWS is tested and approved by BMW to meet the specific requirements for the M series engines - it has a different formulation ( which includes additional synthetic esters ) to the Formula RS 10W-60 to meet the specific BMW requirements and the only spec the TWS meets is BMW.
The EDGE 10W-60 is the retail alternative for the TWS Motorsport, which is a workshop only product supplied to BMW dealers - the EDGE Sport 10W-60 is the alternative to the Formula RS 10W-60 and these do not meet the BMW specifications.
So for the M series asking for the 10W-60 grade, I would recommend either the TWS Motorsport from BMW outlets or the EDGE 10W-60 ( which also only carries the BMW approval ) from retail outlets
Hope that helps

No idea, Mikey, but it may make it more efficient
I should remind you that the V12 DB9 Manuals seem to recommend Mobil 1, so not sure if the Castol is just for the V8 engine ???
I bought a 4 litre tub of Mobil 1 from Costco 15 months ago but I've never needed to use it as my dipstick remains on max (Rick serviced in March). Still can't get my head around the recent thread on 'dry sumps' so I've approached AM for advice. I checked my oil last night after leaving the car for a day, and there was golden brown liquid all the way up to my max point - and that's before I started it

Obviously using the correct grade is important, and as the oils are tested to the extreme in these engines for may owners the difference between the three is probably insignificant because of the more casual usage,
The one to use for the V8 Vantage 4.3 and 4.7 is the sport which is now readily available,
you can check which oil by following this link and entering your registration number

here is a screen clipping for the 4.7

thats because old mens cars don't have a dry sump! You can't generate the g forces to cause oil starvation in a DB9 - its a normal wet sump. Hence your dipstick reading from cold.

Now you are sure it is full to the top we can reveal the V12 engine uses a different oil and a wet sump system
I hope Gorgeous George H is following developments as he was a bit concerned as I was about the dry sump b
ks.Haven't heard from George for a while so I assumed he had gone on a Club 18-30 holiday with Shmee.
Then Shmee posted so George must have gone on his own

I'm presuming the extra BMW additives will make little or no diffrence on our "tractor" engine

Interestingly, if you contact Opie oils- who are pretty well versed in make up, he suggests the Castrol edge 10/60 for BMW is a FAR better oil than the edge sport so I use the non sport version in mine!
we are talking recommended spec over the bmw spec with the extra additives, in real world terms how much difference will it really make, very little if any,
I just went to my local BMW dealership and picked up 3 bottles of TWS. The parts guy originally quoted me $15.95US per liter. When I told him how much AM charges for an oil change, he said he would knock down the price to $12.50US! Shows you how much markup there must be in the parts department if he can offer me such a big discount.
