Gearbox rebuild

My Dad has a problem with his Suzuki Baleno gerabox (known for being made of chocolate it seems)
Basically, it won't go into 3rd or 4th gear.
I've checked the linkage and it's all good - definitely an internal gearbox issue.
I suspect the synchro ring or selector fork is jammed or worn out which means dropping the gearbox to take a look.
I'm quite a competent home mechanic, but I've never actually taken a gearbox apart before.
Access is pretty good, so I don't think taking it off will present too many swear words. But what about taking it apart - any experience here, words of caution etc?
