Morning!!

I've got a bit of trouble with the gator popping out at the back. Decided to remove the transmission tunnel cover yesterday to have a go at sticking it back in place. I know I didn't do the best job (wasn't patient enough letting the glue set) but before long it had moved foward enough to expose the crappy non leather surround again.

Thing is, with it stuck down in the correct position, it felt rather tight when I selected 1st gear. I might be wrong, but I didn't notice the front of the gator being tight when I knocked it into 2nd.

It occured to me after putting it all back together that perhaps the gator has more travel one way than the other, so perhaps I need to twist it 180 degrees to over come the tightness. If this is not the case and I were to stick it down properly, is this tightness anything to worry about? Maybe it will stretch in time?

Cheers

I think they are symmetrical?

However, like all things in a 'hand-built' car the dimensions may have been a bit skimped at the factory.
You should be able to unscrew the ball and collar and then move the leatherette gaiter down the gearstick itself - which will give you more slack to play with. Bit of a judgement call to get this right, as you don't want to expose the steel stick, I guess.

And - yes, make sure the glue is fully dry before reassembly!

Mind it doesn't bite into your hand and go into a death roll if you have it the wrong way round.

Lol, worry enough that the car's going to do that.

The gaiter (tongue out) looks like it came with the car. The way I've managed to stick it you don't notice so much that the front isn't perfect. Might replace it when I work out how to remove the gear knob!

What kind of glue are you using? Is it the same glue you'd use for interior trim? Have a few loose edges on the leather and Just bought a new set of gaitors so expect I'll have the same problems. Will report back when I get the chance.

Using Evo-Stick Impact glue. The type where you glue both surfaces, leave them to dry then put them together. Works really well!

I'm sure the new gaiter will be the right size. Where did you get it from?

I bought new gearstick and handbreak gators from here last year - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/TOP-GAITERS-BOOTS/TVR-/

Cheap, but real leather and a good match. Used plain bostick to glue it and no problems. It was a little tight initially, but quickly stretched itself.

Same here. Top gaiters. A little grubby when they arrived but a quick sponge down and they look like they'll do a good job. Very fast service too.

How do you get the gear knob off? Searched everywhere and can't find anything.

Ordered one of these on Wednesday and it turned up this morning! Really impressed. Was told to mention in the comments when buying what colour I wanted because they only seem to advertise a couple of different ones.

And it's certainly not round like the one on the car at the moment!!

Will try fit it later, as long as I can get the gear stick collar undone. Attempted it at the weekend and failed. Got mole grips but worried about scratching the metal. Any ideas of what to put round it for protection?

Right, new gear knob sleeve ordered. Totally wrecked it getting it off!!! furiousfuriousfurious

Just hope the new one can screw down the (now knackered) threads on the gear stick frown
