Guys / Gals, lokoing for some help with an up and coming interview. (Oh and if I get it I will need to opt out of Company Car Scheme so a nice V6 of some description will head across border).

Looks like I may be moving to Edinburgh with work shortly and I know one of the interview questions hangs on research on where you would actually choose to live (looks at how seriously your considering it). I have a trip up before hand to have a butchers but would like to concentrate the search a little so was hoping for some suggested places.

What I am looking for :

Not City Centre.
No more than roughly 40/45 mins to South East area of Edinburgh City (work).
Market Town if possible (Think York / Harrogate for those that know it).
Will want a 4 Bed house, hopefully for less than about 340/350k ( I know that rules out Ednibugh best bits).

Any Suggestions ? IDEALLY would be south of city so easy for weekends back in Durham, but thats least important.

There's nowhere remotely like York or Harrogate near Edinburgh. All much smaller and more widely spread. Try the likes of Peebles or North Berwick. If you're working near the station and don't need a car in Edinburgh Berwick-upon-Tweed may be worth a look.

I'm in Longniddry, down the A1, railway connections and ideal for A1 too.

Few houses up for sale too which may meet your requirements. Worth a look I'd say.

cheers

Peebles looks a cracking bet (well as you can tell from google maps).

As a total aside I am thinking of a temp pad locally to rent for a few weeks while I find my feet.

What is Dalkeith like ?

If you go west along the M9 you will find Linlithgow. Depending on where you are working most parts of Edinburgh are reachable within an hour probably quicker once you know the back roads. It is also on the main edinburgh - glasgow train line so there is a train in and out every 15mins. Your hose prices will get you a decent 4 bed house with a reasonable bit of garden. The schools and the local academy are also some of the best around.

I'm sitting tight where I am! On the serious side, we did look out by your place, and there were some cracking houses but went for more town-based traditional to try and weather the economic storm. >fingerscrossed<

On a serious not, it is a cracking place, it really is. But, it's just a nightmare that no one wants to buy it!

I think you're suffering from the pendulum effect I used to see when living in Aberdeen. It goes in cycles where everyone wants to move out of town and house prices out of town rise, then a few years later everyone wants to move back into town and house prices fall out of town. I nearly got caught as the wife wanted a mahoosive place outside the bypass in '07 and I put my foot down saying no way! - the house was offered 6 months later for a 20% discount!!

The only thing would help you just now is for a serious price drop*, but if I was you I'd sit still still it comes back around. if you can, of course.

*disclaimer: I'm honestly not in the market!

That sounds like you are trying to get him to drop the price so you can afford the house and suddenly be on the market. hehe

Dalkeith is a mixed bag. Some nice places in the smaller villages round about. Lasswade. Like others have said not much in the way Market Towns.

Along the Peebles lines is West Linton and possible Biggar, and various smaller villages like Carlops in between.

There's Penicuik, fairly large, fairly bland but a nice enough place. Probably plenty house in your price range. (certainly at the moment anyway). 40 mins to City Centre in the bus.

It does, I can see, but having spent a fortune on mine, no way am I moving! Just had a little 'un and working overseas again means no house-moves for a minumim of 4 years for me! An extension is on the cards though....
