Morning all,

While sitting in the outside lane at traffic lights yesterday my Chim decided to cut out just as I was about to pull away. The car would not restart and I had to push it over into the side of the road. The following applied –

• Fuel pump was engaging ok and the alarm was set/reset a few times.
• About 30mins later (just before the recovery truck arrived) the car eventually restarted after lots of turning the engine - did not press the throttle during this.
• During a 20mile run home (almost all duel carriageway) the car would stutter for a moment then pick up when accelerating in 5th gear (say between 60-80mph) – otherwise was not too bad.
• As I got home the revs would not drop below 2500rpm on idle.

I checked a few things late yesterday (though found nothing) then took the car out for a 10mile drive last night; it seemed to run fine, including idling. However I am concerned there is an underlying fault somewhere which could repeat itself.

Has anyone had any similar issues? Any feed back would very welcome.
Cheers
Richard

I would check:

Fuel pump relay
All connections in footwell
Stepper motor
In line resistor (connection of coil to ECU, mine is taped to the wiring harness running to the AFM)
Suppose it could also be failing ign module but wouldn't have though it would re-start it was that.

The first simple thing I'd think of as responsible for a sudden high idle would be the stepper motor. However you never know with TVR's, hence I'd go thorough everything!

That's exactly what 'failing' ign modules do IMHO, intermittent hot or cold conditions causing head scratching then suddenly OK.... until next time.... progressively getting worse and eventually tot!

Hi DD
i had a similar problem, except for the high idle. the lead from the top of the distributor, i think it goes to the coil? the bracket had come loose and it was arcing out by the coil. mechanic put new bolt in and it has not missed a beat since ;-)

They're also notoriously difficult to test, so it's one thing I would always advise replacing with new and then carrying a spare (if not needed!).

They don't seem too much of a problem in LR's but the TVR heat seems to push them to extremes.. I still carry a spare in the Discovery though - I'd rather keep Sod's law on my side hehe

Ign amplifiers do show the symptoms described.

I had one fail 2 years ago on the trip to Le Mans.

We felt a 'stutter' on the M1 around Northampton, but nothing again until we got into France when it wouldn't start after having stopped for fuel.
We had a coffee while everything cooled down so we could start checking and it started straight away when we got back to it.

Then it just died in the queue to the campsite. Cue us shoving it over and another Griff owner turning up and being equally puzzled. We gave up and pushed it somewhere safe until the other guys turned up (I go to Le Mans with Johno and Ballistic Banana so if we can't diagnose a fault it needs an expert)
Again, it started first time when we went back to it.

It died half way back to the port. We checked all the leads and replaced the King lead. It started, so we assumed we'd found the culprit, until it died again on the M25.
I was lucky and had everything from dizzy to coil as spares. So we replaced the ignition amp and its never had a problem since.

Does that all sound familiar?

For the sake of about £20ish I'd just replace it. If you haven't got a spare you need one anyway so you aren't losing anything.
The part number on my new one is Unipart GIM 5043 and the one which failed was Lucas 9EM Ignition Module

Thanks for all the comments so far, certainly gives me something to work on (Steve Heath book out tonight to find component locations etc).
Cheers
