Chrome Audi R8 Gives 'Platinum' Return (Groan)

This ever-so-shiny Audi R8 Spyder was donated by Audi as the centrepiece for Sir Elton John's annual White Tie and Tiara Ball.

It was auctioned off for a not inconsiderable £250k (significantly more than its near-£120k list price), and proved so popular Audi donated a second one, eventually raising another £370k in the process.

Eye catching this chrome V10 Audi R8 may be, but we can't help sparing a thought for the hose-wielding teen tasked with cleaning it when it glides into the local hand-wash.

And the owner will need more than enough spare change to cover the odd hand car wash, too - as we imagine regular visits to the paint (or wrap) shop would be necessary to keep it suitably 'bling'.

Fortunately the new owners are likely to have pretty deep pockets, if that charity auction price is anything to go by...

Ive always loved chrome paintwork, better than boring outdated silver, which is on everything now as every manufacturer seemed to want to do a Mercedes uping their image.

I remember some here saying it was illegal to have chrome paintwork as it would blind people in the sun on bright days as it would be like a mirror. But 2 months ago I saw a chrome paintwork Porsche 911, I even had to take pics, it was in the night down Oxford Street.

Certain ex-Premiership footballer who now plys his trade in the SPL for Rangers (& strangely appears to be just as unpopular North of the Border) has a chromed McLaren Mercedes SLR which was usually seen plonked in disabled parking bays in & around Manchester City centre.

I think many have missed this important fact. Audi gave a car away for charity, and it made 250K... Regardless of the paintjob, that needs applauding. I'm sure it was chrome just to make it shout out.

Not the colour or car I would choose, if I had the necessary funds, BUT I'm glad Audi make it as it is a fine piece of engineering, the 2 cars made a lot of cash for the charity, so it's a 9 from me.
