Exercise after a hip replacement
Discussion
So, I have athritis in my left hip and now need a replacement with some sort of modular sports jobbie.
I can't say that I am delighted but that's the way it is.
The consultant has obviously said that running will now be verboten, other than a very occasional 5k (no point in that
) and cycling is now the way forward for me. But he also said that karate is not good either, which I intended to start up again after a gap of many years.
I guess that he is the expert, but does anyone on here have any first hand experience of exercise after such an operation? I know that the more that I do the more that the replacement will wear so I fully expected the ban on running, but I'm surprised about the karate. And he also said to be cautious about weight lifting (squats and leg press).

Hi T40ORA,
Can I ask how old you are? I'm 31 and in need of a total hip replacement, and I'm currently looking into specialists and types of replacement joint. At the moment it is all quite bewildering and whilst I am away at work I thought I may as well do as much research as possible.
I'm pretty active with work and in my spare time (though most wouldn't believe me when I tell them!).
If you are willing to drop me a PM regarding who your specialist is or have any recommendations I would be very grateful.

That's very young for a new hip, did you have perthes as a kid?Can I ask how old you are? Funnily enough, I did. Luckily I only had it one hip but I come under the small percentage where the hip was very badly damaged during the stage at which your bones form and harden. It's basically buggered now and is impacting on my job and day to day life to such an extent that I am struggling to walk any distance. Even the beer isn't killing it now!

Rob, did you get my mail? I haven't received the copy that PH normally sends when PM'ing somebody so I'm not sure whether it's got through to you.
Hi Lee, I did get it, thanks very much for taking the time to email me. I sent you a reply this morning hopefully you should have that too.

Nope. Spam filter working overtime again! I'll check to see if you've been quarantined
