for standard chain-a-shop there is pizza express and zizzi's, both near to the museum gardens. Pizza express wins out really on account of the excellent building it is in - it's near the lendal bridge.

If you're into real ale and ciders I would second the recommendation of the Ackhorne - it's a bit bigger and comfier than the maltings... you will have to run the gauntlet of micklegate to get to it, but it should be too bad.

The supposedly top end restaurants are the blue bicycle (Fossgate) and melton's. I've never been to either but supposedly good.

For Italian I can recommend Delrio's which is on Blossom Street just outside the bar (gate) at the top of micklegate. L'antica Locanda on the shambles is also excellent though slightly more expensive (but perhaps also slightly fancier).

There are plenty of curry houses, most are much of a muchness... I think the viceroy of india on monkgate is supposed to be ok... There is one on micklegate (Saffron Desi) which was very good when it opened but perhaps not so good now - still pretty good though a bit variable, doesn't ever go near to inedible though.

For tea and cakes you are supposed to visit betty's cafe in (???) St Samson's square (I think), something of a York institution. Café Concerto somewhere near the minster is also good for that kind of thing.

Anyway - have a fun time! I love York, I lived there for 10 years and only moved away last autumn... would love to go back sooner or later smile

Presumably you will be in midtown. Downtown is basically shut at the weekend.

What are you looking for? Fine dining? Any food preferences or style/nationality ?
