Sagaris engine rebuild?
Discussion
Does anyone here know of (or own) a Sagaris that has had a rebuild?
I am asking because when I sell a property I own, I will be looking for one and I am trying to figure out what I should pay.
I have narrowed the choice to the following:
1) T350 for around £20k and ask Dom at TVR Power for a 4.5 for around £10k
This would be a total outlay of around £35k for a properly sorted T350
2) Sagaris for around £40k and cross fingers (followers)
that it does not 'break'
Head says T350 but heart says Sagaris but I would be gutted if I spent £40k(odd) on a Sagaris and then had to spend another £10k on a rebuild.
I guess the question is, are the 4.0l engines in the Sagaris that much 'stronger' than other speed sixes? i.e were they built with better internals (cams etc) than previous engines?

Its a toughie.. Depends on what you want from the car.. absolutely brutal performance = 4.5 power..
Non rebuilt T350 or Sag will always carry a risk no matter what anyone tells you.. My money would go on a late T350 for around £20 ish then put the money aside for the rebuild which incidentally may never come, (But you might secretly hope it does so you can get your power 4.5)
All imho.

I bought a rebuilt 06 sagaris engine from craig Winstanley, this was rebuilt by jason at Str8six by the previous owner to Mr Winstanley, So yes they can go pop, dont know what caused the engine to go bang but it was a expensive rebuild,
Tvr Power installed it into my T350c as my 54 3.6 engine seized up! @ 14,600 miles cause not investigated yet, considering the 4.5 0r 5ltr upgrade when tvr power make available.
Buy within your budget set aside some cash to get a upgrade if yours should decide to fail thats IMOP.

if it was me...
I would go for a nice T350c and do a LS3 conversion
ofcorse a 4.5 L6 is nice too if you want to kep it more original.
but I like the Idea of TVR and a V8,
owned 2 TVR's V8 in the past.

I have thought about a T350 with an LS engine in and I have spoken to a few guys on here that have done the conversion and I have also spoken to Warren at Topcats to get an idea on costs etc. For what you get it's a bargain really as they really do consider everything but its the sound of the speed six that appeals to me more. When you hear and drive one, they bring a smile to your face just standing still.
A while back a friend of mine, Nish, had a Red Glow pearl Sagaris and we were sat in traffic once and he revved the engine and it popped and banged and I was laughing all the way home. THAT'S what appeals to me about the speed six.

That's what I am trying to figure out. I dont really want to spend any more than £45k but at the moment that is the price of a Sagaris on it's original engine! That's a lovely looking T350 you have there by the way
Buy a Sag and get a warranty from Dom at TVR power if you are so worried about a rebuild. If it was me I would never settle for second best and if you want a Sag get a Sag. It will cost you £12K (inc. VAT) for a 4.5 rebuild with new clutch, engine mounts, starter motor, water pump assembly and injectors as it would be silly not to do all this at the same time. How this price compares to an LS3 conversion I don't know but for me I'm like you I prefer the Speed 6 engine to a V8, I thought I wouldn't but I do.
Have you driven a speed six yet , it seems unwise to be searching for more power for a car you dont have .
A speed six is a very quick road car even in the puny 350 bhp 3.6 version , i am not sure if for me the 4.5 is just too much for a road car Dom did offer me a drive in his but didn't have time but thats a lot of power in a very light car , maybe if you track allot ?
If you dont want to spend on a Sag and then a rebuild then you have already answered you own question , get yourself just about the best looking car ever made , if you look at a Sag as some do and think thats the car i will always want (
Clive ) then you need to get your head round needing more money if the worst happens . However not all TVR speed six cars are a money pit , late cars do seem to be lasting better and rebuilt cars from the respected builders are very impressive .

I have driven a 3.6 T350 and a 4.0 Sagaris. They are very powerful engines in standard form but I always try to look at everything I do from the worst case scenario and if the engine does let go then I need to assess, manage and try and mitigate that risk. You raised a very valid point in your post though, if I buy the T350 will I drive past a Sagaris thinking what-if?
