Put deposit down on car but...

Looked at Audi A2 , FSH looked really nice, bit dear but nice...asked if cambelt had been changed ,was told it had put deposit down to pick up this week. joined A2 oc and the first thing somebody told said was to change the cambelt, i said it had been done they said make sure it's been done in the last 4 years/60000 miles. e-mailed the seller to make sure and it was in '05. i know it was my own fault for not for not getting all the facts first, but now i've bought a car that's going to land my with a £400 bill before i even f**king drive it.

thats what i was thinking tbh, tell him to keep the deposit and walk away and try and be a bit brighter next time. no excuse but i'd been at work for 14 hours and was too bloody tired. i did ask if the cambelt was due and he said it wasn't due for another 30000 miles..

If you intend to keep it for some time, then whats 400 quid? it only equates to circa £1.10p per day for a year.
If the rest of the car is right and worth the money, just get the belt done.

You could always ask him if you can have the deposit back if he's a nice guy he might say ok?

Short of that, how much was the deposit? If it was £200 or something you might aswell buy that car imo

well not tooo expensive a lesson, but you could argue with him that you didn't know it was changed 6 years ago as that's not really a recent cambelt change.

if it were me i'd ask for £50 of it back as a goodwill gesture and see what he says, if not walk away if you're not happy or buy the car and chance it as is, or buy the car and change the cambelt

up to you if you think the car is worth it now

Yet £400 is for a cambelt??

Ask for your deposit back nicely... they might give it you. Else just put it down to experience and get the car. You'll likely waste another £50-100 faffing about to find another any in fuel costs and the like.

Out of interest why the fk is it £400 for a cambelt change? Surely your not going to take it to an audi dealership? at that age its not worth keeping Full Audi Service History you might aswell go for a specialist they'll do it way cheaper.

right , emailed the seller and he sent me a rather nice e-mail back, with pictures of the cambelt etc.... he's an f1 engineer and seems a good guy, so bugger it i'll buy the car and get the belt changed at sometime . saves me dragging my arse around looking at crap again

I really wouldn't "get it changed sometime" tbh... driving round with a way overdue cambelt change is never a good idea, even if it looks ok it can have a weakspot somewhere and suddenly go and before you know it that cambelt change has turned into replacement valves and various other problems.

If your gonna buy it, get it changed ASAP.
