Can anyone recommend me a bottle of Red or White wine for £30 or £40?
Thanks
Depends what you (or the recipient) like. Thanks
If you are in London, Berry Bros will give you good advice and have a good range.
If you like big reds, the Californians are drinking well from '07 - e.g. from the Ridge & Stags Leap estates
Closer to home, something like the Fugue de Nenin 2004 is within budget and drinking very nicely.

Alternatively, how about the fine wine section of Majestic? Get the manager or one of the full time bods to help.
Lastly, as above, a nice Mersault or Montrachet for that money in white and in red, simply trawl through some Margaux and you should find something at that price point - or maybe slightly more....

Don't be a snob and pop into Tesco on the way home, Chilean reds are awesome, Austrailian whites too!
You could buy 10 bottles of red and so what if you don't like half of them, you may find an absolute cracker (to your taste)
Chilean reds do it for me, Argento, Chileno etc, you don't have to spend a lot to find a good tasting wine and it really does have to taste good to You!
