Casio W-800H-1AVES
Discussion
I've been checking out vintage Casios too. I used to have one of these and am considering getting another just for the hell of it

I'm in the same position. I've recently bought a W-800 and an F-91w. I find I'm wearing them both a lot. Interestingly, my Mrs's Cartier recently had to sent away for a service. She nicked my F-91w (it's a cool grey colour) and I can't get it off her!!!! She prefers it to her Cartier.
So I understand your thinking.....weird though isn't it!!!

When I bought a Bin Laden special, I bought the missus one with the blue EL illumination thing.
This'll be useful when you're breast feeding at night, I quipped.
I'll not be wearing that tat, she retorted.
Of course, it never leaves her wrist now.
I also had the misfortune to pop into American Apparel on a trip to the UK recently, they sell them in there at a massive mark up.
They do also tend to get worn by the alternative lentil eating unicycle riding numptys.

Something that has been a little surprising - of late the 3-4 Casios I've got, especially the retro ones, have been getting more attention than the Swiss - seems like quite a few people fondly remember them.
However, judging by how many people say they're going straight out to buy one when they hear they're still available, they'll soon be almost as ubiquitous as they were in the 80s!

I agree. Strange how a simple but cheap watch attracts warm and positive comments. I agree, nostalgia has something to do with it. My favourites are A158-wa, F91-W and the W-800H. My swiss don't get a look in, apart from black tie do's (Girard Perregaux) and occasionally one of my Seikos. But I'm loving the Casio's. There is something strangely comforting about wearing a simple £10 watch....what's that about?

I suspect the fact that being lucky enough to own things like Subs and Breitlings doesn't mean I can afford to wreck/damage them whilst in a ten quid Casio I won't give a s
t, well, I probably will as I'm a bit OCD like that, but at ten quid you just buy another vs. a spare Sub.Bohemianesque said:

For me the whole cheap watch thing was about not wishing to appear too flash in "emerging" countries - partly in recognition of the fact that a decent Swiss watch would represent many years income for the average bloke on the street, and partly to avoid being turned over for it.However, I found that I actually rather liked the retro look of some of them and they didn't go back in the watch box. That said, I do sometimes get grief from the OH who reckons that wearing them in the UK, especially with clients, looks like I'm taking the mickey - never had that reaction from anyone else though.
The only real problem I've found is they're so damned light it's easy to forget to take them off at airport security which sometimes, but not always, sets of the archway.

I will admit, I've got a hankering for a jihadi special (F-91W). I don't know why, I wear my PO daily... but something filthy inside me says "buy a £9.99 watch... go on... DO IT!"

Hmm... I certainly wouldn't class myself as a hipster, nor a jihadi... I can't grow a beard for love nor money (and as we all know, it's either a goatee, or the full Osama that differentiates both groups!)They're less than £6 on ebay... I'm going to hold off for now though, can't have people thinking I'm a hipster

Edited to add - I found another distinction:

I'd never be caught dead wearing my watch on my right wrist!!!

I agree in a sense. I bought my first one on a whim (and a bit of nostalgia), funny thing is.....at £8 quid I'm still protective of it and really want to look after it just like my more expensive watches.
t, well, I probably will as I'm a bit OCD like that, but at ten quid you just buy another vs. a spare Sub.I think also the fact that I live in a reasonably affluent area (I say reasonably....as there are a few too many 'ferrari up the drive...no bacon in the fridge' types around for my liking. Quite a few of them have gone tits up in the last 18 months....been chased overseas literally by HMRC....or gone into hiding from more scurrilous types that they owe money to. Anyhow, it seems to me too many around my parts (the orange people, my Mrs calls them...) sport very blingy and expensive watches little like some of their other 'accessories'. So maybe it's just me being a grumpy old man.....but in my 40's...!!
It turned up today. I don't know if it's because I've got that used to watches costing at least a few tens of pounds but I do find myself wondering how the hell this thing can come from Japan to my doorstep boxed, packaged, with a manual, and yet everyone involved in the process still makes a profit, though I guess this is just as true of a packet of chewing gum.
Anyway, cheap as chips, nicely built in a fifteen quid piece of plastic way and quite retro. The strap is a little thinner than I expected though I think again that's just because I'm more used to bracelets or divers straps.
It also looks great on my wrist, which might sound a little daft or "obvious" for a watch, but having skinny wrists means that some watches can overwhelm them (my Panerai was a good example, lovely watch but I did look a bit like a little kid playing dress-up with daddy's watch).
No point posting photos as there are bigger/better already out there, but for fifteen quid it's a no-brainer
