Only if I would do the same if the car wasnt a learner. AKA I wouldnt treat them any different from any other car on the road. I've seen people pulling manouvers which in other circumstances you just wouldnt do, but because it was a learner in front they thought it was ok.

I was following an old Audi the other day, with a learner in a Vauxhall Red (Read; Pink) mk1 Corsa with L plates on it.
After the roundabout it was a two lane exit, going into a single lane eventually, around 400 yards later.

The Audi attempted the most painful, slowest and downright dangerous overtake I have seen this week. Well past the end of the two lanes, and over the white hashes with oncoming traffic flashing away. The Corsa eventually drifted over to the Audi, nearly clipping it. Distracted or after some compo, perhaps.

The best way to dispatch a learner is to over take with extreme throttle, cut in, and slam on. Works every time.

As an add on to this ...
How many of you like me tend to give the learner in front a much bigger than necessary gap and take the heat yourselves from those behind who see that large bit of tarmac in front of you and want you to fill it?

Why wouldnt you overtake a learner? You would overtake a tractor when safe to do so, whats the difference?

Virtually daily, where I live is learner central! (Even I learnt round these here parts)

It gets ridiculous when you have one doing a 3 point turn and 2 others waiting to do the same manoeuvre in the same place. So its either over take or wait 15 minutes

I overtook 3 this morning on a dual carriageway. I ALWAYS leave double the amount of space before cutting back in, just so that they dont feel the need to brake etc.

Shame about the cock in DPD delivery van who proceeded to tailgate one learner for about 3 miles through a 40mph zone.

I always provide plenty of room and try to do it slowly, if that makes sense, so not to startle.

What annoys me a lot though is when the instructor takes a clearly incapable driver down a busy commuter route during rush hour. Why not stick to some quiet roads until they can drive faster than 3mph???

I just treat them like any other vehicle. If it's going slow i'll overtake.

The only thing i'll do differently with a learner in front is when we get to a set of traffic lights, i'll make sure I leave a big enough gap to drive around them when they inevitably stall.

driving instructor - "Just take it easy here"
me - "I'm not letting that knob in the [insert car driven by knob here] get past me"
-light goes green, driving instructor's car launched from the line the hardest it has even been launched-

although if I find the name of that driving school which uses the Mk6 golf GTI as the driving school cars I should be fine.

I wouldn't overtake a learner who was driving at the speed limit around town just because I felt I had to overtake because it was a learner. When I was learning to drive a few years ago people would pull some stupid stunts just to get past me even when I was making good progress. I was taught to get up to speed on NSL roads and overtake slower vehicles and people didn't react well to being overtaken by a learner in a driving school car with the sign on top.

What I see alot of round my parts, is a learner that is doing sub 30mph will just get tailgated by some numbnut in an attempt to get them to speed up or more than likely try and get them into an accident!

I tend to just hold back and drive with all the time in the world if their doing 40mph or below, don't see a point in hassling them. NSL though, will always overtake.

Tailgating is a bug bear with me, when I get boy racers up my arse regardless of speed limit, I'll just go slower to pis them off! Obviously I won't if I'm in a big queue of traffic.

Best approach I've found is to hang back so they can 'go to sleep' with the rear view mirror stuff, then, when they least expect it, explode past with a huge sneeze off the waste-gate and a belch of flame... Infantile, but....
