gearbox quiery

hi all! my gearbox went bang a few days ago! ive just purchaced a mk2 escort 4speed box from ebay today but just finished taking out my old box and noticed that the old box is a 1.6pinto 4speed from a cortina!!! im assuming the mk2 box will fit, but will it make any difference to my gearing??
any info would be great!!

The gearing as such will not necessarily be that different.
4th of course will be the same IE 1:1
The only difference in the other gears will be slight in that 1st may be either slightly lower or slightly higher depending on the power output of the engine it was originally matched to. This will follow through on the other gears 2nd, 3rd.
You may well not even notice.
The speedo gearing is where there may be a difference but again this might be barely noticeable.
If the bell housing are detachable and the one does not align then it is just a case of switching them over between the two boxes.

Ive just been told by someone who "apparently" knows about old escort gearboxes that a 1.6x-flow box wont bolt on to a 1.6pinto engine!! Is this correct?? If so I could have a wee problem in that ive gone and bought the wrong box!!

i thought the same when i read your prob.but was'nt 100% sure , i did'nt think the boxes were interchangeable .

On the basis that a 5speed Type9 gearbox out of a Sierra bolts straight on to a crossflow the short response is "untrue". Yes you'll need to make sure you're using the crossflow clutch plate with the smaller splined hole and the correct tin plate between the engine and box- which may need trimming with an angle grinder but little more than trivial mods. Go for it...

gearbox doesnt fit!!!!
is 2inches 2 short!! the spindle all lines up fine but the drive shaft is to short!!
neva mind though!! been on the fone thismorning and now have a 4spd cortina box that will deffo fit!!!
cheers for the input guys!! may possibly have a good x-flow 4spd box for sale if i dont decide to keep it as a spare for the other jeep!!
