2nd Ride = Snapped Chain...

After a really enjoyable ride last night I was actually excited to get home tonight, put a bit more air in the rear tyre and go for a bit of a longer (10 mile) ride which would have possibly killed me!
5 minutes up the road... bit of a hill, I'm up out of the saddle to give it a bit of a kick (still had a lot of energy at this point!) and the bloody chain snapped!!!!
I'm bloody amazed!
So had to push it home... thank the lord I didn't get too far!
Called Halfords... "the Manager is on a confrence call (lol) and I wouldn't fix it if I was you as it may invalidate your warranty!!!!"
Since then he has called me and it's in for a new chain which he "thinks is covered on the warranty"!!! THINKS!? I said it bloody better be otherwise you can have it back and I'll have my money back and go else where!
I really hope this is not indicative of my ownership ahead... I've got to say dealing with Halfords is not easy.
It's a Shimano chain on a CBoardman Comp... a £700 bike (I appreciate this is peanuts compared to some)... I really don't expect this.

I once fitted a new shimano chain and for whatever reason, the link didn't work properly and it went in a big way when I was flat out, standing up going offroad up hill and I was thrown over the bars! I just remember opening the taps and there was a loud bang and I was on my back - thought I'd been shot! Certainly shouldn't happen on a new bike but sounds like you got away quite lightly - there's a lot of energy released when they let go!
I wouldn't accept anything less than a new chain as I'd image at least one of the links will be badly twisted now.

I also had a chain snap after about 40-50 mile of buying.
£1300 specialized.
Was extremely pissed off, took the broken link out and never had a problem since, 2000 mile on.
Hopefully it was a one off for you. Replacing under Warrenty is a bit extreme though. Can't you just pin it back together?

If they replace it under warranty then fair enough, I think petrol to halfords will be more than a set of powerlinks 
My chain snapped on a first ride of my new Commencal in the middle of a busy junction, I did a half endo half balls squashed on the top tube chicken run. In retrospect I should have taken it easy and let the chain wear in, not power off in a far too high gear. After a new powerlink and a few easy hours riding it has been rock solid.

Maybe bang home the safety issues of your chain snapping to the manager of halfords. IMHO the chain on a new bike shouldn't snap unless a) its a crappy cheap chain or b) it's been fitted/joined incorrectly, i believe shimano chains require a new pin everytime the chain is broken/remade.

I think this might answer the question I posed in the thread about modern bikes being expensive crap.£1300 specialized.
A bloody bike chain should be able to withstand the loads being put through it under normal use.
I'm sure people will come along to tell me to spend more money or ride it differently or put more GT85 or no GT85 on it but 40-50 miles on a bike costing over a grand is not good enough.
If our cars did this we'd be up in arms.
chains snap because people change down a gear as they increase the force going through them, often out of the saddle on a climb, or because they are badly maintained. a new chain has a higher probability of snapping because its not bedded in and will be very stiff.

I'm going to check tonight... I'm not sure but the rear derailleur may have got caught up so I just hope that is OK. By the way... I'm not being a miserable moany old git about having it replaced... They told me not to fix the chain! However, on a 3 week old bike I'd expect them to replace anything and everything that breaks on it.

Agreed. The pedals on my Scott were in bad shape when it went in for it's check up and were replaced without me even mentioning it. However that was the excellent North West Mountain Bike Centre, can't say Halfords would do the same.Thought I'd update...
Halfords have fitted a "better" SRAM chain for me along with a few other bits I wanted free of charge and also given the whole bike a once over... classed as the 6 week check up service... it's only done about 10 miles!
Went for a ride tonight and it all seems good! Happy again!
Side note... Halfords have the new female CBoardman MTB's in white with a pink C in the CBoardman logo... they look the nuts!!!!
