Convertible

I have the (sort of) go ahead to buy a third fun car, however it is fairly restrictive. It needs to be a convertible, automatic or dual clutch and seat at least four. Budget up to about £20k. The missus had a Mini some time ago and likes the look of those, I am a bit more partial to the M3 E46 but concerned they look a bit dated now.

I would really like something a touch different but so many cars do not seem to fit the bill, primarily due to the number of seats (eg Maserati)

Any suggestions?

You may want to consider a 996 if the rear seats are just for kids.

Dated...are you kidding! Is that really what you'd be thinking as you're blasting down a nice road, roof down, listening to one of the greatest engines ever made! Get a grip mate

Fair point but how often its going to be driven 4 up and what the mix of powerfully built adults to small children is has not been clarified.

Thanks for the responses. I have a 7 year old a five year old and a one week old. The car would be used to carry around a combination of those. We have a Disco for the whole family.

Thinking outside the box, how about a 335i? They are newer and look more modern than an E46, although you may think that it isn't special enough to be a weekend car.
