I've got a nice shiny new V8 Developments performance short engine on order for my engine rebuild. The question now is which cam to combine it with? I'm looking for something which will add a little bit more top end urge than the standard unit without turning it into a peaky track day toy.

The V8D Stealth cam is the first that springs to mind. Any others I should consider?

Stealth or TVR Power 885. Both make an equally valid allround choice (which is not to say they're the same!).

Or are they? I get the impression V8D isn't big enough to have its own cam grinding facility and I can imagine TVR Power isn't either ... maybe they're both a 'Kent Cams xxxx' profile? smile

Why do you think there called V8 Deveopments !they do all there own head work and develop new cam profiles ..They may work with other companys to develop new cam specs ..

Trust me they are different and were specced by Rob Robertson and TVR Power respectively. Kent and Piper can grind you a cam for the applications they list to the customer's specification in addition to the profiles they list in their own catalogue (mine came from Piper but is rather different to any profile you'd buy off the shelf - the exact spec we'll probably never know though, as the engine builder seems to have b*gg*red off to France... wink ).

Strange I was under the impression they farmed the headwork out but did build the engines scratchchin is'nt the Stealth not more aggressive than the 885?

I was half joking about the cam profiles. getmecoat

So is the Stealth a more extreme profile?

Neither can be described as 'extreme' - that's the 404(H)'s place in the RV8 cam pantheon. I remember Mark Adams saying that the 885 was the slightly hairier one of the two (when doing some homework for a customer that wanted an induction/cam/MA chip package - in the end we went for the Stealth) but Rob of V8D says the reverse so I'm sure I've remembered it the wrong way round.

Anyway, both would be absolutely fine from a road car dirveability POV (as 500 RV8s go, obviously) and give good gains through the 'meat' of the rev range as well - that we all agreed on. smile

bounce

Starting to get excited about getting the car back on the road now. My goal - not as lax as it sounds given it's kept 200 miles from home and I only get to work on it every few weeks - is to get it back in time for an event I'm doing in September.

The short-stroke V8D engine should liven things up a bit too...

Great to see you are making progress Chris, stick with it mate.

As you know I recently had Rob fit his Stealth cam in my 4.0HC.

Although my old cam was worn it wasn't horrendously so, all I can say is the Stealth cam made a massive difference to the way the car performs.

The car remains totally tractable and smooth but now has a new found urgency the higher up the rev range you go & the power delivery remains very linear.

In fact I'm so glad I took Rob's advice and went with the Stealth not the milder MC1, personally I cant see why you would need a milder cam in these cars.

The Stealth combined with my new lightened flywheel has transformed the car, much more like a spots car should be yet no lumpy idle or fierce power band as it comes on cam.

My advice would be to go with the Stealth cam & fit a lightened flywheel, you wont regret it.

Funny you should say that scratchchin because I plan to overhaul my 400 over the winter months along with some minor mods and I am looking at a replacement for my HC cam and I like something with bite and as I don't use my car in the suburbs anyway laugh low speed drive-ability is not a big concern it's what the gearbox is for looks like I will be going along similar lines to Roysums motor spec (as in pounding 400) idea wanted to build up my 4.6 x bolter but I just can't justify the expense at the moment so I think that will be going up for sale shortly(typical waited long enough to get it) frown Alex you may have to wait a while though for feedback as the car go's to bed over the winter thumbup

Its touch and go if the staelth cam fits all applications ..You may need pocketed pistons..I had the MC1 cam in my 4l and it went like the clappers..and better manners low down.

I have been trying to compare cam characteristics (difficult to get reliable graphs though) - but I am virtually positive that the Stealth is the "hairier" of the two...

Although how "hairy" it is, would probably be relative...

Just to show cam figures dont mean all that much, the stealth has got more duration and more lift than the cam mentioned above, but i bet it drives a whole lot nicer!

Sounds like a bit of a ramp to me hehe

Out of interest how many datum points do you have to give Kent to grind a cam for you Rob, or can you spec the profiles mathematically modelled to some extent?

Its OK Rob I know the Stealth is a peach wink and probably better optimised for the RV8 as you say biggrin

Hopefully it will fit this one ... the pistons are coming from V8D too.

I got very good fuel economy with the V8D MC1 cam ,its not that mild it would surprice you..More lift more duration means more petrol ..Still better ,smoother and it does give you a kick so alot better than the factory spec cam..TVRBOB will tell you he fitted the MC1 in his 4L HC..i don`t think you need the verneer timing set for the MC1 Cam
