Grand Palace in Bangkok itself is spectacular.

If it's just a couple of weeks I'd spend a week up in the north around Chiang Mai, and a week down around Krabi.

It's just scratching the surface, but gives you a flavour of the broad range of Asian culture and scenery.

IMO SE Asia is a backpacking destination in its own right, and more interesting and attractive to me than Oz.

Seeing you're in that neck of the woods, Koh Tao is meant to be worth a visit.

Well if it's the same train that I caught years ago from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then catch the ferry across to Koh Phangan? Then I would get off the train at Chumphon and catch the speed boat across to Ko Tao, then on to Koh Phangan (that's what we did). The train journey is terrible but you do get to see Thailand very very very slowly.

Just a thought. biggrin

Crocodile farms are meant to be interesting, lots of belt and handbag shops (crocodile skin of course) plenty of shooting ranges (various guns) and i spent a lot of time jet skiing. jet skis around ten quid for 30 minutes over there compared to 30 quid for 15 minutes in europe.

If you have a few days in BKK, try these:-

Chatachak Market - weekends only. 15,000 stalls selling everything know to man.
Longtail boat - charter one for yorself and buzz up an down the rivers and klongs. Keep throwing Baht at the driver and he'll go pretty damn fast!
Royal Palace - for a little culture.
Get down to Sukhumvit Road and the Soi's around 11. Some good bars and places to eat.
Taxis are dirt cheap, but the traffic can be painful. The skytrain is cheap, efficient and easy to navigate.
Club Eden - cross the yellow line if you are daring!
Don't bother with Siam or Parogon, unless you like travelling half way around the world to go to the shops.
State Tower for drinks, if the attire and budget allow.
Restaurants - try No Hands. If it Swims or Cabbages and Condoms for novelty factors.

When you say Full Moon Party, presumably on Koh Phangan?
If so, you'll most likely transfer from Koh Samui.
If you have time in KS, try the Fishermans Village for good, authentic food.
Chaweng is like Blackpool with sunshine, but still has a lot to offer. Great bars, clubs etc. The beach has a great vibe at night. Try the Ark Bar on a Wednesday night for a good party.
The west coast of KS is far more chilled and less developed.
If you have a few quid and want to see the beautiful people, spend a day at Nikki Beach or for a slightly lesser budget, Beach Republic.
There is loads to say about KS, so PM me if you want.
Do you realise, you should prepare yourself for quite a bit of rain in September in KS??

Have you booked your accomodation for the FMP? Its worth staying on the island for a night or 2, as the ferry and speed boats are an accident waiting to happen (some already have infact)

Have fun and PM me if you want.

Can't help with Bangkok appologies! But am on kata beach now in Phuket, and went to a food wagon at the side of the road not really looking at what I was buying, anyhoo it was a smoked catfish! Proper ugly fecker but tasted nice, whilst I was hopping back on the scooter a bar girl jumped on the back and said "where you take me!" at 5pm! Shat mesen. Enjoy! (yeah yeah cool story bro etc lol)

Ps ice cold chang out of a can is lovely, and 6,4% - good stuff. And if you rent a scooter - do plenty of life savers - left right and centre, it's a free for all but enjoyable!

This. It's quite simply the most stunning beach you'll ever see.

Eating fresh pineapple after you've been for a swim, and washing it down with an ice cold Singha. Ace.
