'2006 focus C-max Zetec, with the bog standard Ford radio/CD with the controll doo-dahh below the indicator stalk.

My radio keeps muteing, sometimes for a split second, last night for the entire trip home. It's not the same as pressing the phone handset button to the right of the radio, that displays "MUTE" on the display.

Google says either:

Someones cut the wires from a hands free device and the ends are shorting/earthing out (seems unlikely, the cars only done 33k in 4 years, hardly repmobile milage).

Faulty radio, £200 for Ford to look at it (I could go to Maplins for a head unit and re-wire the whole system for that!).

Anyone think of a third option? Or point me in the right direction for where to look for the fault?

Also, drivers door speeker cuts out, seems a common ford problem so which connector is it likely to be?

Perhaps get hold of the right tool, and pull the radio out to investigate the wiring loom behind it. My Focus driver side door speaker cuts out also, i'm pretty certain its a loose connection either at the speaker or at the back of the radio, but can't be bothered investigating.
