Quick question.
How much should I be looking at to get someone in to install an extractor hood. Work involves brickwork for venting, fixing hood to wall and connecting to electrical outlet (which is in place)

cheers

I'm not entirely sure about costs for someone else to do it, but they tend to be pretty simple jobs as a DIYer if you're up for giving it a go?

As teh electric is already installed, if it is a plug in one in (presumably) your kitchen, you can do the work yourself without needing sign off from a sparky. If it is a wire into the mains one (more common I believe), I think you probably would have to get someone in for that element to get the certificate.

At a rough guess, I would say it would be about 2 hours of labour for an experienced person to come and do it, so take an average hourly rate, double it and add a bit!

You can DIY but you'll need a core drill bit and a decent drill.

Depending on the hardness of your bricks it's either fairly simple or a backbreakng 2.5hrs for the core drilling alone.

I did this myself last year and it took about four hours start to finish and doing a neat job (if I say so myself). Biggest job is drilling through the cavity wall; I made a ring of about 30 to 40 holes both from the inside out and then outside in before chipping the brickwork away to create a nice, circular hole for the vent.

You will also need to notify the council as this falls under Part P being in the kitchen. Or just deny any knowledge of it when questioned!

If you get someone who is a member of a scheme such as niceic they self certify the electric install and notify for you.

If you have to notify yourself it can get expensive.

There is absolutely no need to notify or get a registered electrician to install any appliance in a kitchen, unless any part of the fixed wiring is altered.

Only this falls under Part P.

Just get yourself a local handyman or builder to make the hole, hang the extractor and plug it in.
